Hands-Free and Loving It

The Issue

When I purchased my home, the laundry room did not have its own light switch to turn the light bulb on and off. Instead, there was a string to pull on to turn the light on and off. At first, this didn't pose a problem. However, if I had something in my hands, it became an issue walking into a dark room. The light bulb was located in the middle of the room, so I would have to "feel" my way to reach the string. I figured I had enough and decided to search for a solution.

The Product

I took a trip to Home Depot. After telling the employee the situation, the First Alert PIR720R 360 Hands-Free Light Socket with Motion Sensor was recommended for indoor use. I was told the socket was easy to install and does not need any wiring. Since I was looking for something easy and quick, I figured this was my best bet.

The Set-Up

The package included the First Alert PIR720R 360 Hands-Free Light Socket with Motion Sensor and an instruction guide. The product was recommended for indoor use. Also, the bulb should be exposed (not covered). In order to install the socket, I unscrewed the light bulb. Granted, since the room was dark, I took a flashlight into the room so I could complete the installation.

The First Alert PIR720R 360 Hands-Free Light Socket with Motion Sensor supports 25W to 100W bulbs, which was not included with the package. The sensor was screwed into the light socket. I took my 75W bulb and screwed it into the bottom of the sensor. Afterwards, I turned on the light and then exited the room to test it out.

The Result

Once I left the room, I waited to see if the light would go off. In roughly four minutes, the light turned off. I decided to see how long it would take for the light to go on when I walked by the room. I moved past the open area (around 10 feet from where the bulb was located) and the light went on right away. The next test was to take the laundry into the room. My hands were full and the First Alert PIR720R 360 Hands-Free Light Socket with Motion Sensor turned on the light right away.

The only comment I have is that if you are in the room when the light is on and there is no movement detected, the light will turn off in four minutes as expected. All I had to do was move and the light would come back on again.

Final Thoughts

I was pleased with the First Alert PIR720R 360 Hands-Free Light Socket with Motion Sensor. I no longer have to reach in the dark to pull a string in the middle of my laundry room.
