Whether you're traveling, or you're at home and need a secret hiding place, you can make a helpful arrangement by using an ordinary hanger. With the hanger, you can hang garments, and tuck their accessories into a pocket, or you can just use the pocket to conceal jewelry, money, and more. It's an easy sewing job to make the unusual coat hanger pocket that can help you hide or organize.
Choose a lightweight to medium weight of fabric to start. White is a good choice because, sometimes, coat hangers have white paper from the dry cleaners. The white cloth can easily look like paper. But if you prefer another color, that's up to you.
Fold the fabric in half so that the right sides are facing each other. Draw around the hanger, leaving a tiny opening for the crooked end of the hanger. As you draw, stay about a quarter-inch to a half-inch away from the hanger. That will allow you extra fabric for the seams. So, draw across the bottom of the hanger, around the corners, and up to the area where the crook begins.
Cut out the two pieces of fabric, leaving them pinned together, and sew around them. Start at one side of the crooked area, down to the "corner" of the hanger then do the same to the other side. Leave the bottom area of the hanger open. Turn the arrangement right-side-out.
Fold the open end of the fabric under, a half-inch, and sew around it. This will hem the open end of the hanger fabric. Tuck the edges under, right around the tiny, top opening, and hem, too.
Cut a long, rectangular pocket of the same cloth, or a different fabric. Position the pocket on one side of the hanger fabric, close to the lower edge. Tuck the edges under, pin in place, then sew around the two sides, and across the bottom.
Slide the hanger fabric onto the hanger. The pocket can be positioned in the front, to hold a tie, jewelry, or other things that go with that garment. Or, you can position the pocket to the back of the garment, and hide things like jewelry, money, or even a folded paper. Take the hanger storage with you when you travel or just use it at home. You can store or hide all sorts of things.
