Hangin' Out on E Street: A New Video Series of Up and Coming Artists Influenced by Bruce Springsteen and His Classic 1984 Album Born in the U.S.A.

Did You Know: Bruce Springsteen's Album Born in the U.S.A. Was the First Commercially Released CD Produced in the U.S.A.?

Aly Adair
One of my favorite singer/songwriters of all time is Bruce Springsteen and his 1984 classic album Born in the U.S.A. reflects today's renewed hope that our troubled economy is in for a brighter future and Americans are proud again. Even though the title hit song Born in the U.S.A. is about the hardships of returning Vietnam Veterans, the song has become an anthem symbolizing American pride, unity, and perseverance.

What is also wonderful about Springsteen's album Born in the U.S.A. that reflects America's current renewed hope is that before 1984, compact discs used to produce commercially released music were supplied by Japan. In September of 1984, CBS Records opened America's first CD manufacturing plant in Terre Haute, Indiana and Born in the U.S.A. was the first commercially released CD to come out of that U.S.A. plant. How fitting is that, given that Springsteen is considered one of America's strongest patriots and champions American workers with seemingly impossible challenges to overcome.

The album Born in the U.S.A. is Bruce Springsteen's most successful album of his career, selling more than 15 million copies in the U.S.A. alone. The album includes seven Top 10 hit singles: Dancing in the Dark, Cover Me, Born in the U.S.A., I'm on Fire, Glory Days, I'm Goin' Down, and My Hometown. Springsteen's album reached number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart in both 1984 and 1985. The record of seven Top 10 hit singles is a record-setting tie with Michael Jackson's Thriller.

In quintessential Bruce Springsteen fashion, he doesn't take all the glory of Glory Days for himself. Bruce Springsteen and Columbia Records are releasing a new series called Hangin' Out on E Street that showcases up and coming artists whose music careers were influenced by Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band. You can see the first seven video performances of these young artists on Bruce Springsteen's official web site. Check out the Avett Brothers from North Carolina covering Bruce Springsteen's hit single Glory Days from the Born in the U.S.A. album.

Other new bands that were influenced by Bruce Springsteen and featured on Hangin' Out on E Street are The Gaslight Anthem, Ted Leo, Against Me!, The Bouncing Souls, Mat Kearney, Juliana Hatfield, and Wyclef Jean. Bruce and Columbia Records are going to release a new featured video every week for a couple of months starting in March 2009, so check out the Bruce Springsteen web site frequently to see the next rock America stars. Thanks Bruce Springsteen and The E Street Band for bringing America songs of hope for the past 40 years!

Excellent. I find this whole series intriguing. That song is pivotal in my memories of musical moments, although I won't say why ;)

Great write-up! I love Bruce- his songs never get old! He did such a great job at the Superbowl, too. Long live The Boss!
