Hanging Rock

If you live in the triad of North Carolina, then you are within driving distance to a beautiful, hidden treasure, you were not even aware of. Hanging rock is a beautiful sight of the Saura town Mountains. This is a 30 minute driving distance from Winston-Salem, N.C. There are two picnic shelters and a man made lake to go swimming in . You can fish at the park but, you must have a fishing license. Bass and crappy are abundant.
There are more than 18 miles of trails to walk. The Cascading waterfalls are breath taking. The window falls are gorgeous. It takes a few minutes to get to the falls walking but, one of the giant rocks actually has an open hole in it. The colors of the rocks around the window shimer with vibrant colors, as the sun falls on them.
There are over 300 types of flowers and all different types of animals in the park. Flowers range from rhododendron, azalea, galax, mountain laurel, and ferns. There are squirrels, birds, lizards, snakes, and other wild animals.
Rock climbing is available to climbers who have the right type of climbing gear. Climbers must register with the office before climbing any cliff's.
Ranger's hold Nature classes for groups. The classes are set up in accordance with science, math, social studies, and language classes. These classes are set up for 6th-8th graders. Teachers are given a work book about the class. Contact the park office to schedule your class.
Exhibits are of the rocks, plants, and animals at the state park. There is a video about the Saura Indians. The park was named after them.
You can choose from camping in a tent or camping in a cabin. There are 73 camp sites available. They all have picnic tables, grills, and tent pads. Wash houses are close by. If you prefer a cabin, the cabins have two bedrooms, a kitchen, and a living room.. There is a fee to camp at the park. Cabins are rented two days at a time in the fall and winter. In the Summertime the cabins are rented out by the week. There are 8 campsites closer to the office. They are not fully equiped though. This is for campers who like to rough it more.
