Hangover Tips and Remedies

I Drank Too Much!

I have had my share. I am betting that most people reading this article have had their share as well. Hangovers are not fun and are the motivating factor in many gut-wrenching ( literally) promises made in the early morning hours. Here is a collection of remedies that are supposed to help either prevent a hang-over, or lessen the terrible effects of one. Nothing is guaranteed to work, but any of these could be worth a try.

Eat a good healthy meal before heading out the door to that party. Carbohydrates are good at absorbing alcohol as it enters your bloodstream so have a dinner of pasta or a sandwich.

Take a vitamin B and a vitamin C pill before drinking. These are said to help alleviate hang-overs as well.

Drink water in between alcohol drinks. This will help keep you hydrated, and feeling better all night.

Munch on any available snacks while drinking. Pretzels are a good choice but anything is better than nothing.

Try to drink light colored alcohol instead of dark colored alcohol. This is because there are pigments in the darker alcohol that can contribute to the terrible "headache hangover".

Never start with beer and move on to other alcohol. Never. If you do you can be just about guaranteed of the worst hangover ever the next morning. It is always best to stick to the same drink and not mix alcohol, but if you do switch, make beer last.

Before you go to bed, drink lots of water, rehydrates and fluhes the system.

Do Not take any acetaminophen-based pills as these have been found to be very dangerous when combined with alcohol. If you need pain relief in the morning for a headache, try ibuprofen. But not on an empty stomache or you may get an upset stomache. Also, do not take the ibuprofen the night before. You do not want it in your system when the alcohol level is high in your system as well. Wait until morning if you want to take an ibuprofen.

Try some honey with herb tea. Good for nausea and soothes headaches.

Dry plain toast, some fresh fruit, or some plain soda crackers may help an upset stomach.

I have heard people say carbohydrates in the morning works well for them; conversely, I've heard people say it's a protein food that helps. For me personally, I'd have to go with the protein. But a good rule of thumb is to go with whatever your body is craving. Your body usually knows what it needs and thus you experience that "crave" for a certain type of food.

Drink water in the morning, or sip on a sports drink if you can. Even sucking on some orange slices can help by raising blood sugar levels and replacing electrolytes.

If you are lucky enough to have the opportunity to do this...Go Back to Sleep for an hour or two or three! Remember to first drink some water or sports type drink.

If you feel bad and nothing is helping, try a cool washcloth on your forehead and lay down in a dark room.

Now might be the time for the promise to be made to never drink again! Or at least not so much again!

Lastly, moderation if not abstinence is the best way to prevent a hang-over. Think ahead and plan to keep your drinking down to moderate levels and not overdo. Your head and stomach will thank-you in the morning.
