COMMENTARY | Hank Williams, Jr. doesn't want to let it go. ESPN decided to pull Williams' intro from Monday Night Football after over 20 years because of Williams' analogy involving President Obama and Adolf Hitler last Thursday, October 6. Williams has decided to exact his revenge against the network, as well as the television show, "Fox and Friends," by penning a new tune.
Williams has also asked people to stop watching both ESPN and Fox, but I wonder how many fans that Williams has compared to the number of people who enjoy viewing shows on both networks. I'll take a stab in the dark in guessing that the number of Williams' fans are just a drop in the bucket, and if they were to take the country singer's words to heart, it would make little difference in the ratings of either.
The lyrics to Williams' new song talk about the United States "going down the drain" and becoming "The United Socialist States of America." For someone who shows obvious dislike for the Fox network, it sure sounds like he has listened to its representatives for much too long.
Sean Hannity, who has a conservative talk show on Fox, has falsely accused the Obama administration of socialism from the time the president took office back in 2009. Hannity and others like him obviously do not know the meaning of socialism, or more likely, are just bent on bringing President Obama and the White House down no matter what it takes.
According to the dictionary, socialism is "any of various economic and political theories advocating collective or governmental ownership and administration of the means of production and distribution of goods."
Hannity, and the extreme right, do not state that Obama is trying to take over the means of production and distribution of goods. Instead, they try to twist the meaning of socialism to fit their description of the current administration. And Williams, and others that follow these people who are attempting to deceive those who don't know the difference, has gone along with this rhetoric.
Part of the lyrics for Williams' new song talks about "Fox and Friends" twisting his opinion, but he seems not to realize that his own words to the tune are based on falsehoods and a very contorted version of the definition of socialism. Seems a bit ironic, don't you think?
