Hannah Kearney, Shannon Bahrke Take Gold, Bronze in Women's Moguls
Canada's Jenn Weil Finishes Second
Kearney scored a total of 26.63 points for the event, besting silver medalist Canadian Jenn Weil, the defending Olympic moguls champ, in all three scoring areas: Turns, air and speed. Weil earned 25.69 total points in the event. Weil's failure to earn the gold medal prolongs Canada's inability to win a gold medal at an Olympic Games held on Canadian soil, according to the NBC television broadcast.
Hannah Kearney, who will turn 24 later this month, made her Olympic debut at the 2006 Games in Torino, but finished a very disappointing 22nd behind winner Jenn Heil and others. After suffering a torn ACL in 2007 and a concussion in 2008, she made a strong comeback during the 2008-09 season and considers it her best year yet, according to her athlete profile page on the NBC Olympics website.
Shannon Bahrke, the bronze medalist, is no stranger to the Olympic podium and came to Vancouver for one last shot at earning an additional medal. She earned the silver medal at the 2002 Salt Lake City Games, but fell to the 10th spot in 2006. The 29-year old placed sixth in Moguls during the 2009 World Championships.
Two other American ladies qualified for the Women's Moguls finals, but didn't fare well during the competition. Michelle Roark turned in a final total score of just 15.90, finishing 17 out of the field of 20 athletes. She fared one position better than teammate Heather McPhie, who fell from third place during this afternoon's qualifying round to 18th in the finals.
The Men's Moguls event is scheduled for tomorrow evening, and featured athletes include defending Olympic champion Dale Begg-Smith, who is from the Vancouver area but skates under the Australian flag.
