"Hannah Montana" Helps Others Through Charities

She is one of the most popular teenage stars in the world. In the hit television series, "Hannah Montana, "Miley Cyrus played the lead role of a teenage singing sensation. Her friends in the show did not know their friend, Miley, was really the star singer. She has also had several hit songs, including her best selling, "Party in the U.S.A," has lent her voice to the animated movie, "Bolt," toured as a singer, and starred in "Hannah Montana, the Movie." Many people, however, do not know of 18-year-old Miley Cyrus' involvement in making life better for others by supporting a variety of charities.

Miley Ray Cyrus has been involved in supporting the Libby Ross Foundation, which offers support programs to women with breast cancer and is working to eradicate the disease. The charities efforts are focused on early detection of the cancer and research. She recently designed a yoga bag to be used in an auction for the charity.

For each ticket sold for a Hannah Montana concert Miley Cyrus donates $1 to the City of Hope, which provides treatment, biomedical research, and has an educational institution-all designed to find a cure and help prevent cancer.

"U.S. News and World Report" magazine has named the City of Hope one of "America's best hospitals" in cancer and urology. The City of Hope's Clinical Research Hospital provides treatment to those battling cancer and other life threatening illnesses. A variety of caregivers, including surgeons and nurses are able to collaborate, even remotely, while they plan the most effective treatment. Clinical trials, offering new kinds of treatment, are also available.

The Hannah Montana star and the popular young singing group, the Jonas Brothers on September 14, 2008 preformed in Los Angeles in a special concert for the City of Hope.

"We are honored and grateful for the generosity of Disney, Creative Artists Agency and the dedication of Miley Cyrus and the Jonas Brothers in supporting the lifesaving work of City of Hope," Michael A. Friedman, M.D., president and chief executive officer of the City of Hope said, according to the website, looktothestars.org. "This Concert for Hope demonstrates their commitment to improving the lives of patients with cancer," he added, saying the performers involved were helping to make the possibility of a cancer cure being found more quickly more likely.

Miley Cyrus has also been involved in supporting a charity that is a little different than typical charities-Musicians on Call. The charity offers recorded and live music at the bedsides of hospital patients. The idea is that the music promotes the healing process. She agreed to give a concert, along with American Idol winner, Jordin Sparks, and Gavin DeGraw , to benefit the charity. The charity has served 250,000 patients since its founding in 1999.

"We would like to take this opportunity to thank you for bringing music into our facility," one person commented about the charity on the official website of the charity, musiciansoncall.com. "The CD players along with the multitude of CDs you have provided for us .... made a huge difference in the days of our patients."

Miley Cyrus has been involved in charities in other ways. On May 31, 2009, an interview was published in starpulse.com about her own Pappy Cyrus Foundation, which raised money from the City of Hope.

"We deal with homeless shelters. When I was on tour in 2007, my best friend died of cystic fibrosis, and it was right after my granddad had died," she said in the interview. "I just had a really hard time with cancers and other kinds of stuff.... We ended up raising two and a half million dollars for City of Hope (she said of her concert with the Jonas Brothers) and that all went to cures, not just to kids personally, but to cures and studies."

Young Miley Cyrus has had a lot of success in her life. She is one performer who has given back to others as well.
