Hannah Montana / Miley Cyrus "Best of Both Worlds Tour"

Chris Matier
What do thousands of screaming pre-pubescent girls, millions of dollars of gadgets and gizmos, Billy Ray Cyrus, and a 34 year old dad have in common? - Hannah Montana. That's right, as I sit here writing this, I still have the din and the roar of nearly 20,000 girls ringing in my ears. I took my little girl to see Hannah Montana.

Being a hero wasn't easy, first, I had to actually by the tickets. I had to watch hours of Hannah Montana episodes at home. I even had to waggle and wiggle along with the Hannah Montana Video game for the Wii.

Was it all worth it? Yes.

The show, put on by a pseudo-rock star, was actually pretty high in entertainment value. I would even argue that it was better than some of the recent "reunion tours" I have paid for myself to go see. There was pyrotechnics, the required jumbo-tron, back-up dancers, and enough robotic lights to land an airplane, but that is not what made the show decent. It was Miley Cyrus herself that carried the show.

Miley Cyrus, and her alter-ego Hanna Montana, have a personality and a charm that actually permeates a coliseum the size of Denver's Pepsi Center. Her performance as both herself and her character emoted a certain charm that I wouldn't mind my daughter taking on for herself. There was nothing objectionable discussed or sang about, the performers were reasonably dressed, and the audience behaved themselves.

Before going to the show, I was afraid I would be sitting there, critical of spending hundreds of dollars to feed a Disney marketing monster. That simply wasn't the case. The marketing was there, with lines for T-shirts stretching forever, and every girl in her requisite Hannah Montana Costume, but that has become the case with all shows these days. What made this show different, was the humility and the sweetness presented by the pop star which flowed out and was supported by the audience.

After watching the the television show, Hannah Montana's wholesome image is what I have come to expect and value. As a father, it is becoming more difficult to screen and limit what my daughter watches. It is even more difficult to approve what I am able to screen. Now that I have experienced the totality of the Hannah Montana Universe (TV show, Wii, and concert), I can recommend and approve her without hesitation.

When the concert finished, I found myself actually humming the tune of "Girl's Night Out." I looked down and saw my daughter smiling up at me. That moment, while not due to Hannah Montana, was certainly inspired by her. For that night at least, I was my daughters hero and father, I had the "Best of Both Worlds."

Good to see you here on AC. I really enjoyed reading a father's perspective on the whole Hannah Montana phenomenom and you, sir, are a great guy to take his daughter to a concert full of screaming fans of Hannah Montana and Billy Cyrus.
    :)
