Hannah Montana: The Movie Starring Miley Cyrus, Billy Ray Cyrus and Vanessa L. Williams: A Review

Cyrus Really Lights Up the Screen

David E. Barnett
After I had first watched the 'Hannah Montana' show in ABC in Saturday mornings, there was only one quick question that came to my mind: 'Who wrote this garbage?' But, after taking a chance on the film myself, I began to see something else that the series does not show that the movie does: a great deal of heart.

'Hannah Montana' picks up where the series left off with Miley Stewart (aka 'Hanna Montana', played by Miley Cyrus)is now sixteen years old and already a megastar to millions of fans. But, after some serious faux pas (including a shoe fight with supermodel and celebrity, Tyra Banks) and character flaws that could send her spiraling downward and into obscurity, Miley's father and manager, Robbie Ray (played by Billy Ray Cyrus, Miley's real father), he feels that it is time for her to get back to her roots and remember who she really is. In an effort to get her home for her grandmother's birthday, Robbie ray changes the flight plans of a private jet that was supposed to take Miley to New York to perform at a music awards show to replace Beyonce after she gets a bad case of double pneumonia.

Instead, Miley ends up in her hometown of Crowley Corners, Tennessee, where she must rediscover her real identity and try to balance between her personal life and the life of a mega superstar. However, things are not that easy while Miley is trying to adjust, as she has a tabloid reporter by the name of Oswald following her who works for a large British tabloid magazine that will do anything to get the story and too expose her secret to the world. Miley alos finds the first winds of first love with a farm hand named Travis that has loved her since the first grade. With egg collecting, learning to ride a horse again, and trying to readjust to a normal life, Miley then must make a series of decisions between the new life that she is growing to love and the megastardom that she has so longed for since she was six years old performing on stage.

I will have to hand it to Disney and my hat is off to them. They have taken a character that I had a difficult time having anything in common with and made a film that deals with a lot of real issues. This is a coming-of-age story that takes us to places that we all have in common with. We have the first love of our life. We have making hard choices that at sixteen seem so monumental where to a seasoned adult they would seem typical. All in all, both Cyrus' took the package and ran with it to its fullest potential.

What also impressed me the most was how well Miley Cyrus could do country music. With such songs as 'The Climb', 'Hoedown Throwdown', and 'Butterfly', she has shown that she does have the talent to be able to adapt from one genre to another. The msuic in the film and the production numbers were also especially impressive. Of course, I cannot forget all of the camoes within the film from some of country's largest legends and upcoming superstars. Such names as Rascal Flatts and Vince Gill were included in the film which gave the film an espeically special and wonderful touch. Whne you hear Rscal Flatts singing their hit, 'God Bless The Broken Road', that was enough to make me want to see the film.

My rating is five stars out of five stars. The film has elements that will definitely appeal to everyone, both young and old. From this source, this film comes highly recommended.
