Happy Birthday Granny

Today is my grandmother's birthday. She would have been 82 today.

Granny Gerry, as we always called her, was my mom's mom and she was my most beloved grandmother. She was a no-nonsense kind of woman. She told you how it was whether you liked it or not. Her first name was Lena, though she never went by that, and that is the name I gave my first daughter.

Her death was a shock to me. Although she was getting older, was overweight, had always smoked and had breathing problems, she still seemed healthy as a horse. I had spoken to her just a few days before and she was the same old Granny Gerry. But that day when I got home, my husband told me that my mom had called and that Granny Gerry was gone. They tried to save her in the ambulance and at the hospital but it was too late. Probably a heart attack, although there was no autopsy.

It was better that way I think because she did not suffer and she did not have to be a bedridden patient. She wouldn't have done well with that. My only regret is that she didn't live to meet my daughter Lena. She would have had a ball with her.
