As you get older, birthdays begin to mean less and less. More a signpost for another year gone by, a time to renew long-forgotten pledges, a chance to look at your life and compare it against the lives of your contemporaries; but more symbolic than anything to really look forward to. Dread is how many adults appreciate birthdays. While I haven't gotten to "dread" just yet, I also am a realist and see birthdays for what they are. A chance for people to indulge their baser instincts and an excuse to party as though you're much younger than you were.
Still, Facebook is a nice thing. Everyone who you're friends with seems to want to come out of the woodwork and wish you well. That's nice. It's nice to catch up with old friends and strengthen the commonality with new ones.
Regardless, there are a lot of people who come out of the woodwork who you didn't even know you knew. Like the chancellor of National University (I was going to take class there and never did; still they remember my birthday).
Perhaps my biggest surprise birthday wish this year was from one celebrity pop singer/heart-throb, Justin Bieber.
That's right, Bieber remembered my birthday.
I must have signed up for one of his mailing lists when I was writing an expose on the insanity behind his even being as popular as he was. I don't know why I would have entered my real birthday to Bieber; I must have been swept up in my hysteria around his websites even asking.
The email from Bieber was an individual email. From Bieber and The American Cancer Society. Bieber walks out onto an empty arena stage, embraces the microphone, tussles his hair back once, and then he begins.
The birthday song is the one we all know. In place of the personalization of my name, he just repeats; "Happy Birthday, Happy Birthday -- " It's very sweet.
Of course I'm not sure how I am supposed to feel about this Bieber birthday intrusion. Bieber is a celebrity in the highest regard; a celebrity the way that only a 17 year old is able to be.
The link is pretty silly; if anyone wants to watch the Birthday Song, sung by Bieber and sponsored by the American Cancer Society, they can click HERE.
For now I think I'll just be resigned to be growing old. Even if Bieber makes me feel as though I were a far younger little girl.
