Happy Nanna Day: Or, Happy Grandmother Day

We Need a Separate Day to Celebrate Nanna's and Grandmother's Everywhere.

Jaahda Jinnah
Nanna Day; Why is there no particular day set aside for all us grandmothers? In this country many babies, toddlers' young children and children in general spend very significant amounts of time with their grandmothers. Many grandmothers are secondary or indeed primary carers in this day and age.

And there are many reasons for this; they might look after their grandchildren as their parents are out at work or needing child care assistance for other reasons. Many grandmothers are primary carers too due to the many complexities of family life, family breakdown or other reasons of modern society.
Indeed the importance of Nanna's was last year acknowledged by changes in this country to the Family Law Act to give Nanna's (and grand-dads) particular recognition and rightful attention is now enshrined and reflected in much easier access and guardianship rights.

It is not my intention here to write a long article.
I just want to make a short, sharp point; that is we need a Grandmother, or Nanna Day. To pull a date out of the air - how about the first Sunday of every August - or March? Let us know what your opinion and vote is.

I am a grandmother to a beautiful little 4 year old with whom I spend around 45+ hours per week. She is the main thing in my life, and more often than not its central focus. In the last 2 weeks she has been coming home from her Day Care and singing Mothers' Day songs and telling me about the stories and plans for Mother's Day.
It occurred to me that I most likely see as much of her as does her mother.
I told her to tell the teachers about Nanna's too. And to add in a verse into songs about Nanna's. I reckon we should all get our musical and songwriting abilities and get composing and writing. Please end me your songs and verses to publish here - perhaps before we celebrate our first Nanna, or Grandmother Day in August!!!!

Here in Australia, whilst most of you in the USA are all tucked up and sleeping it is already Mothers Day morning. It is now nearly 10am and my phone just rang; it was my daughter asking me if she could leave her daughter with me as she and her husband go to his mother's house to celebrate Mother's Day. Why you might ask? Cos my poor little grand daughter is ill.
But nonetheless the irony struck me. Here I am writing this article when the call came in. and as an adjunct to the end of the conversation my daughter added, "Happy Mother's Day" which made me crack up laughing.

I'm certainly not meaning to detract from Mother's Day. Tis just that in the last 2 weeks I have become aware of a separate need to acknowledge the importance of Nanna's too!!!
Give us your vote.

Meanwhile back to educating my grand-daughter about good places to vomit. Though she is happily playing Lego at the moment :-)

We need to set aside a special day every year to celebrate Nanna Day or GrandMother Day.

Very valid point. I think grandmothers should be honored with their own special day. I usually do for my grandmother at the same time I do for my mother on Mother's Day but she should have her own day.
