Towel Day is May 25th, the day set aside to honor British author Douglas Adams. Adams is responsible for the BBC hit The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, which started out as a radio comedy show series in the 70s and later transcended other media, to include stage shows, books and even computer games.
Douglas Adams died of a heart attack in 2001 at the age of 49. In The Hitchhiker's Guide, Adams proclaimed that there were 42 ways that an interstellar hitchhiker can use a towel, and after his death, friends decided to celebrate an annual Happy Towel Day in his honor.
Adams' fans around the world are encouraged to carry a towel around with them on May 25th; they tweet #towelday, blog about it, even upload youtube videos of what they're doing with their towel.
There are towel day wallpapers for your computer and iPad, cartoons and graphics galore, and of course T-shirts. One resourceful individual has requested that you donate your gently used towels to the local animal shelter. While that may not have anything to do with honoring Adams, it's a nice gesture nonetheless.
So how are people celebrating annual Happy Towel Day today? They're holding contests, sponsoring lunches, and more often than not, just using it as an excuse to gather at the local pub at happy hour, showing off their towel and hoisting one for Douglas Adams.
If you're on FaceBook, head over to the community page and share what's happening on Happy Towel Day in your neck of the woods.
Here in Ohio, I'm celebrating by doing a load of whites.
