Happy Valentine's Day

The True Meaning

Caryn Murray
Remember in elementary school, when you used to bring in Valentine Cards for your whole class? Sometimes they were homemade, with markers and glitter and construction paper and glue and lace... however you chose to decorate each individual one for who it would be delivered to.

Eventually, we stopped making cards, and instead we'd buy a box of cards, sporting whatever character was 'cool' at the time.

If that wasn't enough, then there were cards that had a way to attach a piece of candy. So then you would buy a box of valentine cards, and a bag of candy, and all you had to do was sign your name (you didn't even have to write down who it was for... they were all the same.)

You used to come home from school with a bag full of cards and candy, and it made you feel really special. That's what Valentine's Day is about... letting everyone you know you care.

Of course it is becoming less personal with those store bought Valentine's Cards, but it shouldn't be any different for adults, single or not. Singles whine about Valentine's Day because it makes them feel much lonelier. Couples dread the holiday, because it means they are expected to buy something nice for their significant other. Why? Because it has been commercialized this way.

Valentine's Day is about showing everyone in your life that they were remembered. Why not celebrate it right?
