Hard Candy Movie Review

QUICHE
Starring: Ellen Page, Patrick Wilson, Sandra Oh

This movie is psychological thriller filled with suspense that starts off a little slow, but once it peaks your interest it will definitely keep it. The opening scene shows Hayley, a very mature fourteen year old girl; having an on-line chat with a man by the name of Jeff. After talking on-line for a few weeks they decide to meet at a coffee shop by the name of Nighthawks. Needless to say they hit it off pretty well, and Hayley goes to Jeff's house to listen to a song of her favorite group on his MP3 player. He gives her a tour of his house, showing her all the teenage models he's photographed. She goes to the kitchen and makes some drinks for them, and begs Jeff to take some photos of her. While trying to take her picture he becomes quite ill and passes out.

Hayley has drugged Jeff and tied him to a chair, because she suspects that he is a pedophile. What other reason would a thirty two year old man bring a fourteen year old girl to his home and give her alcohol? Even more so she believes he is the one responsible for the disappearance of a local teenage girl named Donna. She gives Jeff all kinds of torture, letting him know that she is disgusted by his kind. Jeff denies taking advantage of anyone and assures her that he has no idea who Donna; there is no way he could be responsible for her disappearance. Hayley doesn't believe a word that Jeff says; making sure he is incapable of harming any other young girls.

This movie was far from predictable, and kept me on the edge of my seat. Even though Ellen Page and Patrick Wilson were the only actors who had major speaking roles, it didn't take away from the film at all. In actuality there were only five characters in the whole film; this fact made it even more interesting. There is not one single moment that I felt sympathy for Jeff, because he apparently had foul play on his mind. When he found out that she was fourteen years old, the best decision for him to make was to get in his car and leave. The ending of this film was a very good one, but it would have been nice to see a little more detail.
