Hard to Kill Perennials for Your Houston, Texas Garden

If you consider yourself a less than skilled gardener, or if the climate of Houston, Texas has left you feeling defeated, don't worry. There are plenty of hard to kill plants out there that can withstand drought, humidity, and heavy rains, as well as your general neglect. If trying out a few of these plants seems like just what it would take to get your Houston, Texas garden back on track, try planting a few of the perennials below.

Mesa Yellow Blanket Flower. These hard to kill perennials have gorgeous yellow flowers that are resistant to both wind and rain, drought tolerant, and disease resistant. They can also tolerate cold temperatures down to zero degrees. These perennials will bring butterflies to your Houston, Texas garden, and make a great cut flower. Plant them in full sun in the spring and they will bloom from spring through fall in your Houston, Texas garden.

Brown-Eyed Susan. Easy to grow and very pretty, these hard to kill perennials are a great addition to your Houston, Texas mixed border. Plant them in full sun and they will bloom from spring through fall with their sunny yellow flowers. These perennials are disease resistant, drought tolerant, and can withstand high humidity as well as temperatures down to zero degrees (unlikely in Houston, Texas) in your garden.

Lavender Blue Baby Daylily. This is an extraordinarily beautiful daylily with wide, contrasting lavender-blue flowers. You won't believe that anything this lovely can be so hard to kill. These perennials are drought tolerant, heat tolerant, and can take temperatures down to zero degrees. They make a beautiful accent plant, and can also be used in a mixed border. Plant these hard to kill perennials in the full to partial sun of your Houston, Texas garden, and enjoy their blooms in May and June. They sometimes re-bloom later on in the summer, too.

Engelmann's Daisy. A Texas native with pretty yellow flowers that resemble daisies (hence their name.) This hard to kill wildflower will do very well in your Houston, Texas rock garden, or when used in a mixed border. These perennials should be planted in full sun, and will bloom from the spring through fall in your garden. They are disease resistant, drought tolerant, and can take the cold down to fifteen degrees. These hard to kill perennials will also attract birds to your Houston, Texas garden.

Confetti Lantana
. Looking for pink, purple, yellow or multicolor perennials for your Houston, Texas garden? Try these hard to kill beauties. Butterflies go crazy over this hard to kill flower, which is disease resistant, drought tolerant and can take the cold down to thirty degrees. Plant them in full sun in your Houston, Texas garden and they will bloom from April through November.

Orange Shrimp Plant. The tubular orange blossoms of these hard to kill perennials will bring butterflies to your Houston, Texas garden. Drought tolerant, disease resistant and able to survive temperatures down to fifteen degrees, these perennials do very well in shade gardens and containers. Plant them in full to partial sun (they bloom better in partial) and enjoy their blooms from spring through the fall.
