There is some interesting inspiration for why Adam Levine, the lead singer and songwriter of the band, wrote this song. He revealed to a magazine that their band had a lot of frustration when making an album with their label, A&M and Octone Records. The band brought their materials and felt that they had enough songs to make a release. However, the label disagreed and told them to keep on writing. This made Levine write a song about the difficulties and frustration of being under pressure. This song was also co-written by Jesse Carmichael.
The music video that was made for the song happens on a dark factory. During the video, items like darts, candles, pictures, and members of the band fade in and out. At the end of the video, Levine is seen walking and dragging a guitar with pictures on the walls fading in and out. Then, once he reaches the end of the corridor he is traveling through, small lights come on and he is seen pounding the wall. A scene of the band playing resumes and lights flicker on and off.
As mentioned above, this song reached some success in the charts, especially considering that this was Maroon 5's first song. The song reached as high as eighteenth on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100. It also made it as high as sixth on the U.S. Hot Digital Tracks and thirty-first on the Modern Rock Tracks. Worldwide, it was able to make it relatively high on the charts, but was nowhere near the success this band has found in other songs. It made it as high as thirty-seventh on the Australia Singles Charts, forty-seventh on the Euro Top 200, thirty-fourth on the Ireland Singles Charts, twenty-eighth on the Italian Singles Charts, thirty-third in the New Zealand Charts, thirteenth in the United Kingdom charts, and astonishingly, this song reached as high as spot number two on the Polish Charts.
