Despite the formidable cost of tuition combined with the cost of room and board, these universities have a waiting list of students desiring to enroll. Known as some of the finest institutions of their kind, these Universities desire only the finest students. Students must display excellence in all areas and even a perfect 4.0 grade point average will not be sufficient to sway the admission standards.

Numbers 10 through 6 Hardest Colleges to Gain Admittance

The Universities of Georgetown and Vanderbilt reject a full 80 percent of students applying for enrollment. While this is a substantial number, it does not place either institution in the top ten hardest colleges and universities to gain admittance too.

Coming in at number 10 is Duke University. With an enrollment of just over 14,000 students Duke will accept only 19 percent of all student applications. Tuition and other fees at Duke will exceed $40,000 annually.

Number 9 is the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena. With an enrollment of just over 2,100 students this university will reject 85 percent of those applying for enrollment. 2010 tuition rates and fees are just over $36,000.

Number 8 goes to Dartmouth College in New Hampshire. Accepting just 13 percent of all student applications, Dartmouth is still only half as hard to get into as the number one school on the list. Enrollment at Dartmouth is near 6,000 with annual tuition and fees at just over $40,000.

Two schools in the northeast tie for the next spot in the countdown. Brown University in Providence and Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge. Both of these fine Universities reject 89 percent of applications. MIT is home to just over 10,000 students while Brown has an enrollment of just over 8,500. MIT tuition and fees will cost $39,000 annually while Brown costs run near $41,000.

Five Hardest Universities To Gain Admittance

A tie starts off the top five as Princeton and Columbia both reject a full 90 percent of applications received. Princeton has an enrollment of nearly 7,600 students who pay just over $38,000 for tuition and fees. Columbia University is the largest of any school in the countdown with over 24,000 students. Tuition and fees at Columbia top $43,000 annually.

Another tie takes place at the number two spot as Yale and Stanford each will accept only 8 percent of applications. Yale tuition and fees is just over $38,000 with an enrollment of 11,500 students. Stanford tuition and fees comes in at just under $40,000 for the nearly 18,500 students enrolled.

Hardest University Too Get Into In the United States

The number one university on our list will reject a full 93 percent of all student applications received. The 19,411 students who attend Harvard University can count themselves among the select few. The 2010-11 tuition rate and fee are just over $38,000 annually for those fortunate enough to gain acceptance.
