Harmless or Deadly? Staphylococcal, Everyone Has It

Casey C
Staphylococcal is an infection caused by bacteria and is generally characterized by formation of abscesses. Staph infections are the leading cause of primary infections in hospitals. Staph infections were classified in the twentieth century and were known to be one of the deadliest of all diseases. 20-30% of healthy people have staph on the skin or inside the nostrils. Staphylococcal is often found in the upper respiratory tracts, the mouth, urinary, or genital.

Staph bacteria is usually not a concern, although, it can lead to death. When an injury causes the skin to break, this causes the organisms to invade the body, therefore; it over comes the body's natural defense. When this causes a staph infection it produces pus-filled pockets, also known as abscesses. These abscesses are located just below the skin or deep within the body. Younger people and older people have more of a risk of getting a staph infection.

When a person has a staph infection abscess, the area is warm to the touch. This abscess eventually burst, and releases pus onto the skin, which can cause more infections. When a staph infection enters the bloodstream it spreads through the body. This often affects the long bones in the arms and legs. These infections can often make a person very sick and at times they may feel soreness in the arms and legs. This can cause a bone infection, which is called osteomyelitis. This often occurs with children who have staph infections.
When adults develop staph infections, bacteria may cause abscesses of the brain, spleen, kidneys, liver, or heart.

Staph can cause a multitude of diseases; these illnesses are caused directly by the infection. These infections may also occur from products they make such as toxins. These toxins are responsible for food poisoning and TSS, also known as Toxic Shock Syndrome. Scaled skin syndrome is a serious infection; this infection is a side affect from staph. If this infections spreads over a large part of the body it can be deadly, antibiotics will have to be prescribed.
