Harmonize Your Wedding with Feng Shui

Danielle Friedl
Your wedding should be one of the happiest days in your life, filled with joy, love and excitement. Among all the decisions you have to make you should remember to incorporate Feng Shui into your plans to give a feeling of harmony and fill your wedding with a loving energy that can have a positive effect on your marriage that will be felt for years. Feng Shui is the ancient Chinese practice of placement that includes everything from furniture to plants or flower to proper use of color. Applying these simple Feng Shui tips to your wedding day will add a positive energy to your married life from the start.

The first thing most couples do is pick a date. Feng Shui has much to contribute to date selection and it is generally very easy to accommodate. Ideally you should choose a date of the month with either an 8 or 9 in it, or numbers that add up to one of these. In Chinese tradition 8 means love and 9 means eternity. The 18th is the most perfect date as it has an 8 in it AND it adds up to 9. Other favorable dates are the 8th, 9th, 17th, 19th, 28th and 29th.

Most women have been dreaming about their wedding gown since they were little girls, and while white is the most popular choice for bridal gowns, a cream color attracts good luck. Many bridal gowns come in an off-white or cream color and are more suited for a Feng Shui wedding. Red is the color of happiness but not too many brides want to wear a red gown on their wedding day, unless they're on a soap opera. Since your big day isn't supposed to be a comedy simply add an element of red to your flowers or a piece of small jewelry.

The location of your ceremony is often set in stone, as in you can't often move the altar of your church to the northeast corner just because it's the corner for love and marriage! What you can do is use color to enhance important areas like this. You'll likely have flowers everywhere but be sure to put pink flowers in the northeast corner. Candles can be used to represent fire in the north side of your location. Make sure there is room around seating so that the energy can flow freely around the room.

The set up of your reception is very important as well. There should be no rectangle or square tables in your reception area, as the hard, sharp angles create a feeling of conflict. Round or oval tables are perfect choices. Make sure the entire room is lit up. Dark areas hinder the life energy from flowing freely around the room. If it's impossible to shine a light into a particularly dark corner simply add some flowers to that area.

Your wedding cake is another important element to your big day and therefore should not be overlooked when it comes to Feng Shui. Black and white is the perfect balance of ying and yang but it is understandable that not every bride wants black anywhere on her wedding day, and that extends to her her cake. If you're comfortable with it then it's an excellent color scheme to spark harmony in your married life. If not there are other methods. Three is the Feng Shui number of love so a three tiered wedding cake would be perfect. If you are celebrating your reception outside you should have a tall cake to celebrate marital growth. If your wedding is inside and the ceilings aren't particularly high the cake should be shorter. Square cakes stand for a quiet romantic start to a marriage, while round or rectangular provide energy and excitement.

Your wedding day is very important and you want everything to be perfect. By using these tips you can provide a sense of harmony on your wedding day that extends to your future married life.

if more Christians, were Christians all week long......practicing feng shui, the world would be a better place. God allows a freedom of choice. those that choose feng shui, are better for it. To say that feng shui is a form of the occult, shows lack of knowledge as a Christian. Your article is more than acceptable for a Christian.

To finish - I think maybe the word you were looking for was "diabolism." Better luck next time.

Well Caitlin, for starters, marriage isn't just for Christians. God in many forms and by many names blesses a tremendous number of marriages for many different people of many different faiths.

I would like to disagree with the statement that this article isn't "acceptable for a Christian." I would suggest that it just isn't acceptable to your particular brand of Christianity and to you, specifically. I would also venture to say that there are probably an awful lot of Christians who wouldn't be at all comfortable with you ascribing your particular narrow belief structure to their interpretation of faith.

Also, you repeatedly misused the word "occult", which makes any point you were trying to make even more dubious. As per Merriam-Webster, "occult" is defined as, "matters regarded as involving the action or influence of supernatural or supernormal powers or some secret knowledge of them." By that definition, Feng Shui clearly isn't occult. I think maybe the word you were l

I'm having a hard time understanding why someone who is so very offended by the thought of Feng Shui would read an article titled "Harmonize Your Wedding with Feng Shui". If it's not something that you believe in and you are close minded enough to feel threatened by anything not Christian then move on and don't read the article.

It's not the occult. It's the art of harmony in the environment, and placement and flow. Further, anything that might stem from a different belief system (in this case, an Asian culture) shouldn't be put in the default category of "occult"

And to "absurd"- are you using that name to describe the 2nd thing you said? B/c if so, I completely agree.

Feng Shui is an ART of placement and aesthetics, not a religion or occult practice. If the arrangements make you happier, than great! We must remember that not all people are X-tian. So, if the idea of feng shui being used at a marriage offends you, don't use it.
