If you are in Virginia Beach, Va., and looking for a quick bite to eat that won't empty your wallet or divert you too far from the ocean, Harpoon Larry's Oyster Bar is the perfect place. Located at 24th and Pacific Avenue, no more than two blocks from the beach, Harpoon Larry's has something for everyone. Sandwiches, burgers, wings and even a raw bar that includes shrimp, oysters, mussels, clams, and crab legs are up for grabs!
When looking at Harpoon Larry's from the outside, it appears to be a small, run down, side of the road restaurant. Upon walking into the restaurant, the atmosphere is as if you are walking into a trailer with wooden floors and walls. The bar stretches across the main area where you had walked in and tables were placed on the left side of Harpoon Larry's in a separate room. There was only about fifteen or so tables in the entire restaurant.
The walls were decorated with marine statues, fun ocean facts and boating accessories. You can also find a few televisions mounted sporadically around. The staff was very polite, courteous and well accustomed to the tourist community.
Nothing on the menu was over $20 or under $6. As this was our first time in Virginia Beach, and our first dining location since our arrival, seafood was our goal. A large chalkboard highlighted specials and large seafood platters, but it was lunchtime. We chose the Surf & Turf sliders. For $7 you received a mini Angus cheeseburger, a mini crab cake sandwich and a mini blackened tuna sandwich with a side of French fries. Each mini sandwich was topped with lettuce, tomato, and pickle, however only the mini Angus cheeseburger needed the additional color and toppings.
The mini blackened tuna was a very thick and flakey piece of tuna and they didn't slack on the size of the lump of crab either. The portion sizes were generous and far from mini. Each slider was full of flavor and ended up being very filling. The wait time from ordering to receiving your meal was quite reasonable.
I highly recommend dining at Harpoon Larry's Oyster Bar for a quick, filling and inexpensive stop to your Virginia Beach and boardwalk adventure.
