Thoughts on the Harry Goldenblatt Character

Ashley Mott
Harry Goldenblatt, played by Evan Handler is married to Upper East Side princess Charlotte York, played by Kristen Davis in the Sex and the City series. According to imdb.com, Harry Goldenblatt makes his first episode appearance on the August 25, 2002 episode "Critical Condition."

Goldenblatt is a lawyer hired by Charlotte to help her through her divorce from her first husband. Harry falls in love with Charlotte, and she reciprocates though for a time she tries to deny her attraction to him based on a host of factors. Charlotte doesn't like his sweat, the fact that he his hairy, and the fact that he is not the type of man she expected to find love with.

Eventually, Charlotte does give into her feelings though and ends up converting to Judaism to be with Harry Goldenblatt. The relationship faces trouble when Harry seems a bit hesitant to set a date, but the marriage of Harry and Charlotte does occur within the regular TV series as does a sad miscarriage.

In the Sex and the City movie, Harry is seen somewhat sparingly. Charlotte and he have adopted an orphan and are busy helping Carrie plan her wedding to Big. In this movie Harry also becomes a biological father when Charlotte gives birth to baby Rose. His feelings of love over the blessed event allow him to address Carrie in terms of forgiving Big for standing her up at the altar. This hospital scene is the last major appearance of Harry thus far in the series.

A potential plotline for Harry in the second Sex and the City movie is that of the harried father coping with a daughter and a small baby while Charlotte is traveling throughout the Middle East with Carrie, Samantha, and Miranda. Harry was elated at being a father, so this concept could be utilized in any moment of the film and likely will be.

It is possible that another plotline could explore problems between Harry and Charlotte. When Charlotte was pregnant with the baby she was concerned that her life was too perfect. This could have been foreshadowing on the part of a savvy director and producer. They could continue with this theme in the Sex and the City 2 movie to tie them in together and add extra drama to Harry's character.

After having had Charlotte convert to Judaism, Harry could decide to convert himself to Christianity which would leave his character a Christian and likely force Charlotte into acknowledging this religion again. Harry Goldenblatt as a Christian, even temporarily, would be interesting to view on the silver screen.
