School time is just about over for Harry Potter and his friends. Without revealing too much, there is a desperate search for a way to stop the evil Lord Voldemort. Draco Malfoy, the snotty son of the Lucius, the "Deatheater" or minion to Lord Voldemort, is given a mission that he really would rather not take on. Voldemort's quest for absolute power begins to affect the Muggle world. More is revealed of the disturbed little boy named Tom Riddle, who would become the even more disturbed Lord Voldemort. There is betrayal and there is death.
And there are Ron Weasley's girl friend problems, which is what happens when one dallies with someone else when the girl one is meant to be with is-well-right in front of one. (Emma Watson's Hermione Granger gets cuter with every movie.) Harry Potter finds the love of his life too, just when his world is going up in flames.
The trailer is spectacular in its imagery of magic being used for lethal purposes. There are dark waves pounding on dark cliffs. There are dark caverns filled with dark secrets. There are dark, greenish clouds filled with evil magic. There are wand fights to burn, with appropriate explosions and things going up in flames. The voice over by Dumbledore speaks of dire doings and the coming of Harry Potter's destiny, something poor Harry would rather do without by the way. It's hard being the chosen one with the fate of the world on ones shoulders when one is just seventeen.
It's not for nothing that the Harry Potter books and the movies based upon them are the most beloved in a generation. The Harry Potter stories, though written for children, are certainly accessible to adults. They depict the universal themes of the eternal war of good vs evil, of the choice between honor and cowardice, of friendships, of love, and of loss. J.K. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter books, is rightly compared to C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. Her stories are both epic and personal.
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince is not the beginning of the end, but, to coin a phrase by Churchill, the end of the beginning. It will set up very neatly to final, climatic war between light and dark in the two movies that will tell the story of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince premiers on July 15th.
