Harry Potter costumes are all the rage, but they can be expensive. Fortunately, you can make your own homemade Harry Potter costumes for cheap. In some cases, you may also be able to make cheap homemade Harry Potter accessories such as wands, brooms and masks. Here are a few popular Harry Potter costume ideas that will make you the life of the party.

Harry Potter Gryffindor Robe Halloween Costume and Accessories

You can easily make a Harry Potter robe Halloween costume using a long black bathrobe or graduation robe. To make the hood, buy some pieces of fabric in black and burgundy. Use this tutorial on the HalloweenOnlineMagazine.com website for instructions on making the hood and sewing it onto the Harry Potter robe. Find a white shirt, a pull-over v-neck sweater, a burgundy tie and some black pants. Find a slender tree branch that's about 12 inches long. Whittle away any bark from the branch and sand down its surface to create a Harry Potter wand accessory. Finish the wand with polyurethane varnish. Get a larger 3-foot long crooked branch to make the Harry Potter broom. Find some straw and tie it securely to the end of the branch with twine. Make your Harry Potter robe complete with an iron-on Gryffindor insignia on the left side of the robe.

Harry Potter Quidditch Halloween Costume and Accessories

To get started making a Harry Potter Quidditch Halloween costume, find a red hooded bathrobe or coat. Make holes for the laces at the top of the robe or coat and sew some eyelets onto them. Lace the closure together with a red lace. Sew two yellow stripes down the sleeves, the top of the hood and the sides of the costume. Iron a Gryffindor insignia onto the left side of the costume. Then sew or iron on a large yellow number "7" on the back of the Quidditch costume. Directly over that, iron or sew on the name "Potter" in yellow. Get a black shirt and pair of pants and shoes to go under the Quidditch costume. Get a pair of black rimmed glasses and a Quidditch broom accessory to finish off your Harry Potter Quidditch costume.

Harry Potter Dementor Halloween Costume and Accessories

In Harry Potter, dementors are creatures that could suck all the happiness and good memories out of people, leaving them in despair. A dementor has gray skin, no face apart from a mouth and long tattered black robes. To create a dementor costume, get a long black hooded robe, gown or coat. Sew an additional 2 to 3 feet of black fabric to the backs of the sleeves. Cut and tear the ends of the costume and the sewn-on fabric extensions. To make a dementor mask, cover a cheap costume mask with some black panty hose material. Cut away the panty hose from the mouth of the mask. Apply paper mache to the mask everywhere except the eyes and mouth areas and allow it to dry completely. When the paper mache has dried, paint it black. Paint your hands gray with makeup or wear gray ghoul hand accessories over your own.

Bellatrix Lestrange Halloween Costume and Accessories

To make a Bellatrix Lestrange Halloween costume from Harry Potter, get a long-sleeved black or dark gray blouse and cut of the sleeves. Then slit the sleeves down the inside. Lace them back together using a thick, dark twine. Make sure there is a gap between the sleeves and the shoulder of the blouse, as well as on the inside of the arm. Paint a curlicue pattern on the blouse using light gray fabric paint. Embroider some of the curlicues using lighter gray thread. Find a piece of black or gray vinyl fabric to go around your waist. Cut it up into random segments, then sew it back together. Wear a long black or dark gray skirt to match your blouse. Distress a set of artificial fingernails and paint them with orange and brown paint to make them look antiqued. Get a silver chain with a bird skull pendant. Also find a bird skull ring and a bird claw ring. Style your hair in a big, curly and frizzy hairstyle. Pile the hair up on your head so that most of it falls on the right and some wisps of hair fall about your shoulders.
