COMMENTARY | John Boehner and U.S. House of Representatives voted for their debt reduction plan and debt ceiling increase. The vote was a slim victory, 218-210. Yahoo News reports the bill calls for $917 billion in cuts and a $900 billion debt ceiling increase.
Harry Reid and his fellow Democratic Senators have already said they will vote the new bill down sight unseen. If the Senate does vote this bill down they will be responsible for the default when it occurs on August 2.
It is time to place blame where it belongs. The Democrats have not cooperated since the beginning of this process and they have continued to maintain the party line with President Obama. The Democrats want more taxpayer money so they can continue to spend unchecked.
The days of unchecked federal spending are over and Reid and the Democrats need to understand the American public has had enough of spending money on pork barrel union projects like the Train to Nowhere (Victorville, Calif.) for $8 billion. The antiquated and outdated diesel train being championed by Reid and Transportation Secretary Roy LaHood, was highlighted by Yahoo News earlier this month.
The Reid project costs more than a private Maglev train project and goes half as far, to Victorville. A Maglev train would have been better for the environment and would have used little or no taxpayer money. It also would connect Anaheim to Las Vegas. Another deal Reid made that benefits his supporters and steals taxpayer money.
This Congress and President Barack Obama have spent more money than at any other time in the nation's history and now it is time to stem the tide and take back control of the U.S. finances. Boehner's bill is a small tourniquet on a nation that is losing its credit standing by the day.
The strategy of deficit spending is dead and now it is time to implement a serious measure to lower the debt ceiling in the next year, not raise it. If these members of Congress can't figure it out, it is time to vote them all out of office and start over as a nation. The old school politicians have gotten the United States in this mess and if they can't fix it, they need to retire, with no benefits. In fact they owe the taxpayers a refund.
