Hartford, CT Restaurant Review: DD's Gyros and Spuds

Don Simkovich
My wife and I came across DD's Gyros and Spuds while visiting Hartford during a convention. If you're looking for a Middle Eastern restaurant in Hartford, I definitely recommend DD's Gyros on 24 Temple Street.

Finding DD's Gyros

We were visiting Hartford for a convention of NACAC, North American Council on Adoptable Children. During an evening break in early August, we decided to walk from the convention center and we strolled along Main Street to Temple where we saw the sign for DD's.

The restaurant was about ready to close but they served us. The inside was spacious but we chose to eat on the patio. Since closing time was drawing near, the only available meal was the lamb gyro meal for $7.50. It came with 2 dips, tabouli salad, rice, and pita bread.

The Lamb Gyro Meal

My wife normally doesn't like lamb, but we decided to order and eat whatever came our way. The lamb was carved right across the counter from us and the woman working there told us it was her brother's recipe. The salads looked fresh despite the late time of day.

We were pleasantly surprised by the seasonings used on the lamb. The meat was mild. Since we have many Middle Eastern restaurants we can enjoy in Southern California I was surprised that a restaurant in Hartford tasted as good as any of them.

The rice was unique in how it was prepared. It tasted more rich than we usually find in Southern California. I liked eating on the patio and watching people stroll by on the Friday evening.

I rate the Pita bread high as well.

Price and Value
The portion they served was an excellent value for the price we paid. The one lamb meal was enough for both of us and it gave us room to walk around downtown before buying dessert.

DD's location was nice to give us quiet moments to ourselves; yet it was close enough to Main Street to have the sense of people close by.

I don't know when I'll return to Hartford, but for visitors and for those who work in downtown or live near there I recommend DD's Gyros and Bake Potatoes.
