Has Capello Got the England World Cup Squad Right?

James Kent
Here is the England World Cup squad in full:

ENGLAND'S 2010 WORLD CUP SQUAD:
Goalkeepers: Joe Hart, David James, Robert Green.
Defenders: Jamie Carragher, Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, Glen Johnson, Ledley King, John Terry, Matthew Upson, Stephen Warnock
Midfielders: Gareth Barry, Michael Carrick, Joe Cole, Steven Gerrard, Frank Lampard, Aaron Lennon, James Milner, Shaun Wright-Phillips.
Forwards: Peter Crouch, Jermain Defoe, Emile Heskey, Wayne Rooney

I think this is a strong looking England squad, it probably isn't exactly what I would have picked but there is strength in all areas. This is of course the reduced version of the 30 man squad previously named. There is no real need for dispute on the goalkeepers. In the 30 man squad, there were only three goalkeepers named. My opinion is these are the best three England goalkeepers and my choice for the Number 1 would be Robert Green.

Now we move on to look at the options in defence. There seems to be a good blend here with experience in central areas and pace in the full-back areas. I perhaps would have liked to have seen Michael Dawson and Leighton Baines selected, but Capello has based his selection on international experience. The first choice defence of Ashley Cole, Rio Ferdinand, John Terry and Glen Johnson looks very strong. It is really the tried and tested England back four and should leak very few goals.

The midfield also has quite a familiar look to it. The major exclusion was Theo Walcott, and it appears patchy form for Arsenal, and no real impact in international friendlies has cost him his place. Adam Johnson was seen as a possible wildcard pick, but he didn't make the cut. Joe Cole can consider himself quite lucky, because he hasn't had the best of seasons at Chelsea and will probably be seeking a new club in the summer. However, on this occasion, it's international experience that has won him his place. The other big talking point is the inclusion of an injured Gareth Barry. Barry must be close to a return to fitness. With everyone fit, it appears Gerrard, Barry, lampard and Lennon will be the first choice midfield. But for the first game Carrick should take Barry's place.

Up front there were only five strikers named in the provisional 30 man squad. Therefore, only one of them needed to be cut, and that man was expected to be Darren Bent. Therefore, bent had to prove he was worthy of a place. He showed very little in the two friendlies against Japan and Mexico so has been left out. Overall, it is a strong looking squad with plenty of international experience. Capello seems to have gone down the route of established international ability rather than untried wildcards and this should fare England well at the World Cup. The one slight concern is the lack of a mystery player. Other countries may know the England players well, but they still have to stop them.
