Has the Digital Camera Changed a Whole Generation?

Image and Storage: Something for a New Generation

Robert Cooper
What moments do you want to remember forever? What moments that you capture aren't remarkable until you have the opportunity to view them for the second time?

You have just realized the importance of digital and the tremendous value of the innovation of micro storage.

Your life consists of moments. Some you treasure, some you loath, and some seemingly insignificant that you have to imprint in your memory. The new generation, the teens of today, have, without even knowing, begun to travel having with them, almost always, the opportunity to snag a point-in- time. A captured point that can provide verification of what really existed in their past without the necessity of relying on total memory recall.

This is huge considering most brain and memory experts believe that memory is a process, not an event.

According to Michael D.Yapka, Ph.D., "There are multiple steps involved not only in the sequence of forming a memory, but in remembering it later".

Digital storage will make us re-evaluate the memory concept. The snap-shot will no longer be a captured moment of that one huge life event where we stage the participants to form the 'pretty picture' before we snap. We will actually have a new memory each time we look at the image and it will be a compilation of these memories that form 'the memory' of this one event.

Would this then mean a portion of used brain cells freed up to allow possibilities of expanded higher education? Will their future be clearer to them because of the kaleidoscope of pictorial sequences that can be viewed multiple times?

No more is the photo album a mere small binder of each child's 18 years but rather disk space with thousands of image files of every click not just taken by the 'family' designated photographer but be everyone including family, friends, and strangers that may have included you as background of their own memories.

This leads us to another new medium of the generation 'social networking'. Social Networking; A virtual space to unload photos and narrative thoughts freeing up even more brain calls... more on this in another article.

So where are you in the digital realm? A newcomer? A digital convert but without ample time or equipment to really refine your skills?

Rest assured you are not alone and the great thing is the internet is there for you anytime you have a moment. Think of the brain cells you can fill with new knowledge.

There are exciting new products in the digital camera industry. The options are limitless from the new Canon EOS 7D with 18 megapixels, to the Nikon D5000 with HD video capability, to the Olympus E-P1 that virtually illuminates all blur with its image stabilization features there are great new digital devices just waiting for new owners. Don't be afraid to let yourself go and dream in digital.
