Has Your Economic Stimulus Check Been Deposited into the Wrong Bank Account?

1,500 Economic Stimulus Checks Were Sent to the Wrong Person's Bank Account

We've all been waiting for our glorious Economic Stimulus Checks. Perhaps you have already figured out how you are going to spend it. A big screen TV? New furniture? Or maybe you have already charged something, assuming the check will be in your bank account before your next credit card payment is due.

But what if your Economic Stimulus check never makes it into your account? What if it was mistakenly sent to someone else's bank account?

According to the Internal Revenue Service, about 1,500 Economic Stimulus payments were deposited into the wrong bank accounts.

But thirty million payments went to the correct accounts, so the IRS doesn't feel it was that big of an error. Unless, of course, you are one of the 1,500 who didn't get your check.

If you think this is your lucky day because the IRS deposited someone else's check into your bank account, I wouldn't recommend going out shopping for that new big screen TV. The IRS says you must report the mistake to your bank. And you must repay any of the money you have already spent.

There are also two other problems which may reduce or delay your Economic Stimulus check. This week, the IRS announced that approximately 350,000 households did not receive the $300-per-child payment because of computer glitches and human error. They will be mailing out an oops letter and additional checks will be mailed out in July. There is no need to contact the IRS, apparently they are well aware of the situation.

If you filed your taxes through a third party like H&R Block, and you were impatient to receive your refund, you may have chosen to receive an anticipation check, or rapid refund. If that's the case, your economic stimulus check will now take longer and be in the form of a paper check. I guess it pays to be patient when it comes to the IRS.

If you used TurboTax and had your filing fees or tax preparation fees deducted from your refund, you will also receive a paper check. Now I'm glad I was too cheap to pay the high e-file charges.

Well I found out today my check went into the wrong account. They said it was my fault. I checked my paper work and checked my account. Nope right account number IRS fault. Called back and they will put a trace on the money sent and if it was in there wrong (didn't I just say it was right on my paper work) they will send me a new check in about 6 weeks. Now my stimulus check get deposited on the 1st of Aug and its going to the wrong account again. So I have to wait for that to get deposited into the wrong account wait 1 week then call the great IRS (plan for 2 hours on the phone to be put on hold and also the be hung up on) and go through all of this again!

Thank you IRS for doing this to me. Gee I wouldn't know what I would have done today (like get my work done) because i don't have anything better than to be yelled at on the phone because I was typing on my computer then hung up on.

Most big organizations (and our own government's IRS is one of the biggest) make a lot or mistakes. To trust that they will do the right thing correctly in any individual situation is wishful thinking. Checking things out, when it comes to a matter pertaining personally to you, is certainly of the essence. Thanks for the well-written heads-up!

With my luck....nope, not going to think about it. Going to think positive. Good to know of the possibilities of this occurring, though. Good article!
