Has Education Become Business?

If you take a survey to find out if education has become a business, you will be shocked to see the percentage who agree, saying that yes education has definitely become business. Earlier, education was considered sacred, and there was a lot of respect for educated people. But, today it more of a business. Before, educational institutions were run by learned men, whose main motto was to teach people, they were dedicated only for education. But now, anybody who wants to make money starts an educational institution. For big businessmen, educational institutions have become a mark of pride. They just want to establish an institution for fame and to turnaround their money.

Today getting a seat in a reputed educational institution is very difficult. Even though you have the qualification or the required percentage of marks meet the criteria of the institution, if you do not have enough money to pay their donation you will not get the seat. Which indirectly discourages a student, who is very good at his studies. Even admitting you child in pre-kg in a reputed school, you must have money. If you take this issue in much broader sense, as education has become business, even the right for a citizen to get educated is hindered. Sometimes, we read in newspapers about students attempting to suicide, because they cannot get a seat in the educational institution they have dreamt of.

Who is to be blamed for this shameful and pathetic condition? Is it the universities, private institutions, government or the people who are ready to pay money to get what they wanted? If you ask me everybody is to be blamed, right from the universities to the common man who is ready to huge sum for education.

The universities should bring regulations so that the institutions do not levy such amount to the public. They should have a fixed fee structure not only for the fees but also for the donation charged by the educational intuitions. They should have a strict rule, where the first preference is given to the candidate who has good marks, and then comes the others, irrespective of religion, money, caste or sex. The university should not only dictate rules but also should keep a watch on the institutions, and check whether they are following them. The government should support the universities.

Private institutions, not doubt are the best in quality education, but they are the ones who mint money. It is because of these private institutions that people take education for granted. They feel they can pay money, or use influence to get a seat. Especially, when it comes to medical institutions, now it might sound simple when said the seat is given to the candidate who has the capacity to pay the huge donation, but later that candidate who is not fit for the position, is going to become a big problem to the society. Because, medical profession is the most noble profession. Because, after God people believe in doctors, when they have problems with their health.

Thus, steps have to be taken, to bring back education like the way it was earlier. Everybody has to contribute towards that, it cannot be done by a single person and overnight. It will take its own time. We should not neglect saying that others are there to take care of such issues. As far as I get my job done I don't have to bother. Only when this kind of attitude changes in us, we will become better citizens, and prove to be educated.
