The show was bringing awareness to the increasing controversy spreading across the United States on "saggin" and how baggy pants has been outlawed in 12 states. If caught wearing baggy pants in these states, you may be subjected to a $500 fine and even jail time. So if you or your teenagers like to wear the baggy pants with boxers hanging out, make sure their shirt is long enough to cover the underwear or you could be in trouble!
I admit that there have been times when I've been out in public and seen these extremely baggy pants my maternal instinct kicks in and I want to walk up and hike them up. But does it really bother me? Do I do a double take when I see this and do I find it offensive? It doesn't bother me at all. Each generation has their own "thing" with fashion and saggin' is what's in now. America is envied by so many other countries because of our freedom. If we start telling people they can't wear baggy pants, what will be next and where will we draw the line? It's not as though they are wearing the pants without underwear on underneath. That is something I would consider offensive and worthy of a fine.
Dwaine Caraway, the Deputy Mayor Pro Tem of Dallas, is against saggin' and he has created a campaign called Pull Up Your Pants that features a young person with baggy pants and the "Pull 'Em Up!" slogan. He is for the ordinances against saggin' and feels that by the youth keeping their pants pulled up they are respecting themselves and females of all ages. He also feels that the youth will be taken more seriously when going for a job interview or just in general.
Reverend Al Sharpton appeared on the Dr. Phil show and he is against the ban. He feels that making a law against saggin' is like telling a woman that she can't wear a low-cut shirt. Where do we draw the line? He admits that he doesn't like to see saggin' but he doesn't feel it is fair to tell people how to dress either. Reverend Sharpton made a good point when he said, "I think we've got to try to lift kids' minds up, and then they'll lift their pants up."
The Hip Hop Government also appeared on the show in favor of banning baggy pants but their goal is to go about it in a different way. Instead of a government mandate, the Hip Hop Government wants to inspire youth to pull up their pants. Their fear is that the police could shoot innocent youth wearing baggy pants because they think they are concealing a weapon when they are just pulling up their pants.
Dr. Phil sent two of the guest saggin' teens out to a mall to see how the boys were treated. They went into stores like Tiffany's and other high-end establishments and they were treated normally. A couple of the mothers against saggin' were surprised that the boys did not get a negative reaction from anyone. I think it is just something we are all used to seeing.
What are your thoughts on baggy pants? Do you think they should be outlawed in your state? What do you think when you see someone saggin'?

Post a CommentI think that baggy pants are fine and people can have an oppinion about how pants should be worn, but they dont have the right to change the way people wear them. according to the freedom of speech amandment, people have the right to wear what they want and if people dont like it then they can just turn the other cheek. i like to wear my pants bagged because its compfortable, but i dont wear them all the way down my butt because when i walk they will just fall down. Also the way "getto" kids wear their pants is just a sign that they are "getto" because they like baggy clothes because people that are in gangs or rappers or people they look up to wear them like that. a long time ago pants used to look good high up and someone that thought they were cool and do the opposite was to wear their pants low or sagged, so thats when everyone started changing their style and wear their pants low, lower or lowest. Wearing clothes is just a type of fashion and there shouldnt be
I sag every so often, and it gives me a sense of freedom, not because my buttocks is partially out, but because I like to express that I am swag. So haters hate. It shouldnt be outlawed.
i think that kids should be able to where there pants how they like, but they should some times pull them up if they see that the poeple are them dont like them. Like if they go some were with a lot of parent around or some where were u have to dress nice. Some may say this is the way our generation dress but not every kids dress that way. so if u ban, you well be banning it from the kids that dress like that not all of us
What's wrong with look presentable. There were trends back in the day, but you better believe parents and school officials enforced their traditional norms and standards. You had to be grown and/or out of the house to do certain things in certain areas of the USA. Youth of today, why would you want to mess up your legs and spine? Admit it, young men look at your legs. Some of you have permanently gapped your legs and curved your spine. Is it worth that much to you? Are you trying to look like the rappers. They probably don't dress like that all the time. How are you going to explain you gapped legs to your children? How are you going to explain the photos of you with the pants down to your grandchildren? And it sees to take effort for some of you to keep them up. You use one hand to do it. That doesn't seem like a carefree way of moving around. Why go through that? What do you do when you have to run? What you do when you have to carry something using both hands. And w
I join the controversy of the baggy pants and I support Senator Adams. To understand my position you can read the journalist article tittled PANTALONES CAGAOS: DE LA CARCEL A LOS PIJOS URBANITAS O LA HISTORIA DE UNA POLÉMICA EN ESTADOS UNIDOS by Google in http://lablogueraerrante.blogspot.com and, as you know, you can translate to English language.
I have to say that I am dead set against "saggin". I have no urge to see what people are wearing under their pants. I understand that sometimes people lose weight and their clothes don't fit. I also an not against people wearing baggy clothes. But when their pants or shorts are so big or low that they are down below the area where your thigh meets your butt... That is just wrong and uncalled for. Baggy or saggy is one thing but down below your a$$...
That was what I saw the other day when I was driving my teenagers home from school.
"Each generation has their own "thing" with fashion and saggin' is what's in now."
That's just it, and this never seems to be brought up, but this was popular almost 20 years ago. I'm not sure where some of you live, but I can remember as far back as 1989, yes 1989, there were a few folks who were starting to wear their tighter pants off their hips so their underwear was in plain view. The extreme baggy was made popular around 1993-94, maybe even earlier. At this point it's not counter-culture, or the sign of a younger generation having their own thing, it's just ridiculous and makes you look kind of trashy. After all, you can buy these clothes at places like Wal-Mart and Kmart now. When this style was coming up you had to find someone who was 6+ sizes bigger than you and wear their pants. Come up with a new style, this one has overextended its stay.
Coming to you 2 years late, from 2010, where this absurd look still dominates the streets.

baggy pants rule........................i believe its just a trend and it means no harm to the world
its also just a way people wear there clothes like girls wear shoes some boys prefer saggy pants
I wrote a little piece on this topic when Shreveport, La. decided to inititate an anti-sagging law. There's a crime problem in Louisiana and the local politicians think the location of pants will solve everything. When in reality such laws create criminals out of innocent citizens. it's outrageous to think a person could be jailed because their pants sag. I was really mad when Shreveport passed this ban, because I had just lost 50lbs and all my clothes sagged, even when I wore a belt. So, by their "law" I would be subject to fines and possibly jail. Why? Because my pants hung too low? Hell, I just lost weight and I'm poor. Can't get a new wardrobe just because. lol. Great article.
Grits44 - I SWEAR, I have done just that before, several times! It was good for a cheap laugh, and embarrassed the little cretin as well! No, I'm not for outlawing the stupid looking things; we could no longer pants the fools if they were! Besides, if these fools really knew what saggin' REALLY represented (I'll give y'all a hint: IT ORIGINATED IN PRISON!!!!!!), I bet most of them would invest in a good leather belt!
