Breakfast as I've come to understand it has always been something of a passive meal. Just a little something to wash down with coffee or juice; try and get some grain or vitamins in before you go off eating Skittles and Sour Patch Kids and drinking Red Bull all day. Hash House a Go Go has a different take on breakfast though; they want you to eat and fill up! Fill up for the rest of the day, or so it seems.
The interior of the Hash House a Go Go we went to was fairly industrial but open. There were beams across the middle ceiling but a farm style crown extended well above that and had open windows which let light in. There was thumping, industrial techno house music playing but it wasn't in any way intrusive; we could still have a conversation at the table without having to scream or repeat ourselves. Also the discourse between our server was not obstructed by the music. Our reservation was for 10am on a Wednesday which one would think would be a lull between lunch and dinner, but not in Vegas. This place was hopping from the time we got in to the time we left. Still, we didn't wait for our food, drinks, or refill service and we never felt crowded in.
The meals my wife and I got at Hash House a Go Go were not quite breakfast meals though they did have all the essential breakfast elements. Eggs, cheese, meat, biscuit, and potatoes doesn't sound like too exotic. However the essential ingredients are where the similarities end.
My wife's plate arrived first. It was quite literally the whole plate length piled high with food. The Hash House a Go Go website says that they strive to "...keep the fun in food while pulling from the experiences of a farm fresh agriculture, live stock, and old recipes with a twist." The twist is the thing which won us over.
My wife got the HH Original Farm Benedict. This was eggs Benedict served with smoked bacon, tomato, spinach, roasted red pepper cream and topped off with the two basted eggs. My tiny wife is still trying to sleep off this food assault three hours later.
I ordered the HH Famous Meatloaf. The menu describes this as the meatloaf with "...roasted red peppers, fresh spinach and smoked mozzarella." This was also served with two eggs and potatoes. The meatloaf wasn't a solid meat loaf but tiny cubes of what I imagine once was meatloaf. Immediately I was taken aback as the cubes looked like pork cubes I'd had somewhere once to negative effect. However nothing could be further from the truth. These meatloaf cubes were moist and delicious beef and melted around surprising cheese and peppers. The eggs were just over-easy the way I like and the potatoes were delicious and a little spicy. The whole thing was served in a skillet which just added to the fun of the meal.
One of the things Vegas gets really right is presentation. The plating at Hash House was totally impressive. When the kitchen brought out my breakfast I was blown away. I guess in the end, that's the difference between a really good, fresh, inventive breakfast that people keep coming back for and just average same old/same old - the presentation. The taste from both our entrees knocked the cover off the ball. I haven't even been back for lunch or dinner but you can bet that Hash House will be on the top of my list for places to discover again. If you're looking for a great breakfast after a successful all night bender or to while away your sorrows just off the strip Hash House on East Sahara has got you covered.
