When I was growing up jeans were something work men or farmers wore, certainly not the general public. Somehow in the early 50's jeans became something to be worn by the teen population. Definately not the parents but we kids would get out bobby sox and roll the cuffs on simple dark blue denim jeans. Levi's. The girls wore pony tails or a flip and we wore those black and white saddle shoes or loafers, penny loafers. If the jeans cost a big $6.00 that was a lot. Now those Levi's are collectibles. No one wore jeans to school, no one.
If you have the stamina and you need a new pair of jeans you are in for quite a day. Throw back that Starbucks Expresso with two black eyes (two shots of Expresso) and hit the road. The Gap and Old Navy both display walls of jeans. Straight leg, wide leg, boot cut, loose fit, low rise, mid rise, high rise is totally a no no, extra low rise, carpenter, washed, whiskered, distressed, shredded, stone washed, sindigo, black, white, heavy weight, light weight (8 oz to 14 oz). There are four pocket and five pocket (coin pocket), low pockets, high pockets. Pockets with wonderful designs embroidered on them or studded. The choices are endless and that's just one store. Old Navy has a similar array.
These are not your high fashion jeans, these are your every day Mom jeans or let's get the kids some jeans for school. If you pay any attention to Hollywood you know the big name brands are Abercrombie, 7 for All Mankind, Antik,William Rast, Red Engine, J & Co, Frankie B, People's Liberation. These are your over a hundred bucks jeans. Abercrombie features jeans that look like someone pulled them out of the Salvation army bin, am I dating myself? These are called distressed. They have holes and shredding. The shredding is usually on the pockets, belt loops, hems and here and there on the legs. When I first saw the style I thought, well , guess I shouldn't have thrown my old pair away for having holes. This look is something anyone can do to their own jeans and save a bundle. Aren't I just an old fogie! I showed my grand daughter how to shred and whisker her jeans.
Tommy Lee likes People's Liberation boot cut, Vanessa Manilo goes for 7 of All Mankind, Angelina Jolie, Sienna Miler, Fergie can be seen in Frankie B's, Jessica Alba, Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan,Eva Langoria all have pairs of J & Co in their collection. Jessica also likes William Rast and Red Engine. If you have the moola and are built like Cameron Diaz get the same Hudson jeans she wears. Names like Lucky, Hudson, Blue Cult, Siwy also show up in those closets.
If you're going for plain old Levi's or Wrangler remember these two come in every variation including 5 button, 501's, 503's ,505's.etc. At elast once you find what fits you know what to buy the next time.
When you get your expensive jeans remember to turn them inside out to wash them and never wash more than 4 pairs wash load in mild detergent. That is unles you're trying to shrink, whisker or distress them. If you want to whisker them, pinch folds in the hip area and rub with sand paper. Denim is dyed indigo cotton. Color will fade and cotton will shrink. Do not put them in the dryer if you'r happy with the fit. Some jeans will come out of the wash/dryer and then stretch on you as you wear them but I wouldn't take the chance if you're happy with the fit. New jeans can also bleed, againthe Indigo dye so wash them seperately. Those little rivets are decorative but they are meant to keep your jeans from tearing in high stress areas.
When you go to your store of choice to try on jeans don't have a big meal beforehand. Get a knowledgeable sales person to help you. Know your rise, waist and hip measurments. This will help though each style will fit differently. Remember to try sitting in them. They are cotton and will probably shrink in the wash. Lenght will change if you dry them so be sure to keep them a little long to start and keep in mind what you're going to ear them with, cowboy boots, flats, sneaks, Stilletto's.
Jeans like sneakers ar very big fashion now and brands are very important. Ask any teen ager.

Post a CommentI hate buying any clothing at all, esp jeans. When I find a pair I like, I buy about 3 or 4 of them to last me for a long time :)
With fuel injection from Starbucks, anything is possible. :)
Great advice - buying jeans is hard!
