The video for this song was filmed on August 13, 2007 in Los Angeles. It was directed by Anthony Mandler. This song premiered on Rihanna's website on September 24, 2007 and debuted on TRL a week alter. The song shows both Rihanna and Ne-Yo singing. During the video, it alternates scenes in which they are by themselves, making you presume they are lovers missing each other. At the end of the video, though, you see them both meet up with their loved ones, which are not each other. This video was Rihanna's most successful video up until this point in her career but was later overtaken by Take a Bow, which reached number one.
This song was released during different times for different countries. It was first released to the United States on August 21, 2007. It was then released to the United Kingdom on November 12, 2007, and four days later, it was released to Germany. On January 7 of the next year, it was released to France. Europe got this song on February 29, 2008. Finally, on April 16, 2008, this song was released to Italy.
There is an alternate version called Como Odio Amarte, in which Spanish singer David Bisbal sings Ne-Yo's parts in Spanish. However, Rihanna's parts are untouched. This was leaked online on December 2, 2007. This was featured on Bisbal's album as well as the Good Girl Gone Bad re-release. Rihanna and Bisbal sang this song together in Spain in 2008. There is a music video for this song, in which Bisbal replaces Ne-Yo in all the scenes. There have also been Asian edits of the song, as well as Cantonese and Mandarian. The Asian version is also on the re-release of the album.
This song did excellent on the charts, with the worst chart performance being spot thirty. It reached seventh on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and Pop 100 and was twenty on the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs. It cracked the top ten in two other charts, too. It's highest placement on the Dutch Top 40 was seventh and made it as high as sixth on the New Zealand Singles Chart. It was in the top twenty in the majority of the other charts, getting as high as tenth on the Swedish Singles Chart, eleventh on the Romanian Singles Chart and the German Singles Chart, thirteenth on the Irish Singles Chart and Swiss Singles Chart, fourteenth on the Australian Singles Chart and Austrian Singles Chart, fifteenth on the United Kingdom Singles Chart, sixteenth on the French Singles Chart, and seventeenth Canadian Singles Chart. The two worst charts this song was on were the Belgian Ultratop 50, in which is placed as high as twenty-third, and the Danish Singles Chart, in which is placed as number thirty.
