Hatian Orphans Adjusting Well and Meeting Their Adoptive Familes

Twenty-eight of the 54 orphans that were flown to Pittsburgh last Tuesday have already left Children's Hospital to live with their adoptive families in the United States. According to officials, ten other orphans will be united with their new families soon. Homeland Security officials will be handling the adoptions of the seven remaining children who were not in the process of being adopted.

The seven children not yet adopted and the ten waiting for their families to arrive are living at the Holy Family Institute in Pittsburgh. Jamie and Ali McMutrie and American Red Cross volunteers are caring for the children. The Institute is providing them with comfortable surroundings including toys, books and places to play.

Fifty-three children landed at Greater Pittsburgh International Airport on Tuesday with Ali McMutrie, Governor Ed Rendell, Representative Jason Altmire and a team of medical doctors. The final orphan, two-year old Emma, arrived on Thursday with Jamie McMutrie after she had gone missing before the plane left Haiti on Tuesday. Jamie got off the flight to look for Emma who was found at the U.S. Embassy.

When asked about the rescue mission to Haiti to bring the orphans and Jamie and Ali McMutrie home to Pittsburgh, Governor Ed Rendell said, ""We got the plane donated by a benefactor. We had two and half tons of medical supplies in the belly of the plane." Initially, only the orphans who were in the process being adopted were allowed on the flight, but Jamie and Ali refused to leave without all of the 54 children they cared for at the orphanage. Jamie said, ""I'm going to take them hostage until they're taking them all home because I know if I let five go, they're never coming back for the rest of them. If we can get the word out, there are kids, tons of kids, living on the street." A National Security Official finally gave the go ahead to Rendell.

There were 120 orphans at the BRESMA orphanage according to Jamie McMutire. The children that are not in Pittsburgh went to France and Holland.
