Hatred Against Homosexuals

Where the Hell is it Getting Us?

Michelle K. Miller
As most of my readers know, I am an ally of LGBT rights. Throughout the whole political race for the White House, I supported Senator Barack Obama, because he supported LGBT rights, as well. Those of you who know my passion for standing behind my gay, lesbian, and bisexual friends, also know that it's not easy for me, because I live in a hotbed for hatred against anyone who's not straight, white, conservative, and a Christian.

It was easy for me to back the LGBT community one-hundred percent when I was out of church for a year, but since I started going back, I have been praying for my gay, lesbian, and bisexual brothers and sisters every, but my backing them has become a little lax. That was until today.

I was in the kitchen with my mom, talking about the Super Bowl party I am planning to have in February. My husband and I live with my family, so she was curious to know who was coming. I told her that my friends, Kavin and Holly were coming, and that my uncle's incredibly nice ex, as well as his boyfriend might be coming.

And that's when it happened.

"Yeah... we may have to re-think that one," she said.

"Why?" I asked.

"I don't want a bunch of gay mess up in my house."

"What gay 'mess?' Why do you have to hate gays so much?" I interrogated.

"It's not because they're gay," she went on.

"Oh, then why is it?" I was curious to know.

"I don't know them."

"You don't know Holly. You've never met her," I challenged.

"Well, she's not gay either."

"I see," I stated, "so it is because Jerid and Zak are gay."

"I don't have to accept that kind of stuff in my house," she said.

She's right, she doesn't have to have it in her house. However, what is she accomplishing? She proclaims to be a Christian, yet she doesn't want to associate with anyone gay. Did Jesus, himself, not eat with people who were "unacceptable?" As Christians, we are called to be like Jesus. What would Jesus think of my mom, as well as my dad and my brother, along with most of my fellow locals, who call themselves Christians, hating on the LGBT community?

Unbelievers already don't want to be Christians because of the way "followers of Christ" act in other aspects... what message are these "follwers" spreading to the LGBT community? I'll tell you: "God loves you, but we cannot accept you into our lives or our church because of your choice of lifestyle."

"Christians" call liberals radicals, but what are they? Radicals for hatred, intolerance, and opposition of diversity, in my opinion. I'm not saying they don't have a right to believe what they want to believe. I'm just saying that they could do it in a more loving, Jesus-approved way. I don't think that Jesus Christ, at least the one I know, would be happy with the verbal war on homosexuals and bi-sexuals.

My point is: Where is this hatred getting us? Nowhere, that's where. Those who mistreat homosexuals are living in a backwards world, opposed to the revolution of peace and tolerance that others are trying to promote.

My stance? I am behind you, my brothers and sisters. I am ready, now, more than ever, to rally behind you, and set the revolution on fire!

I will be right beside you Michelle! I cannot tolerate hate in any form, but to dislike someone because they are gay is beyond believe! Excellent article and bursting with truth!

I personally try not to hate anyone, and teach my kids not to as well, although there are some that I don't tolerate and don't condone or approve of their behavior. We try to teach our kids to live by the Bible, and just hope it sticks with them for the rest of their lives.
