Certainly Presidents have lied about far more important subjects. I'm not going to name them here but you know who and what the lies were. Lying about one's indiscretions in one's sex life is not exactly a national security issue. So what's the beef?
I don't have a complete answer. There are theories. Young and ambitious, smart and cunning people are often the objects of envy. Envy, wanting something someone else has. Specifically according to the dictionary, the resentful or unhappy feeling of wanting somebody else's success, good fortune, qualities, or possessions. Well there you have it folks. Governor William Jefferson Clinton of Arkansas upsets President George Bush in 1992 and boom, envy ensues. Large scale political envy. Perhaps the worst kind. OK you say but Bush the younger took back the White House for the Republicans and has occupied it for almost 8 years now. Surely this envy can't be still hanging around. Well, surely it can be. Especially under the circumstances.
First, the younger Bush assisted by the Republican party, had to steal the election from Al Gore. Not seen as the nicest way to get to the White House. Secondly, GW became a war time President, an increasingly unpopular war at that. Then we have the nasty fact that Clinton remained popular even after all those attempts to discredit him. Add all that up and add a wife that not only became a very popular Senator from New York, but had the audacity to win 18 million votes in the Democratic primaries! Hot damn! Those Clintons, they just won't go away. So the envy persists.
I honestly thought that by now, given that Hillary didn't get the Presidential nomination, and given that Bill made some bad moves during her campaign, the irrational hatred brought upon by envy would no longer be an issue. Yet, the former President, to this day one of the most popular former Presidents ever and one that presided over 8 years of prosperity instead of economic decline, endorses Barack Obama for President and the air waves are full of cynicism and questions. I write an article for Associated Content about that endorsement and I receive a particularly negative comment by someone who won't give their name but makes up a user ID called "Louisa, this is not against you, please don't take...." . Seriously, it is really ok to disagree with me. I don't take it personally. I expect there will be people with different opinions, all the time. There should be in a democracy, disagreement with many things and people. I disagree with opinions on a regular basis. It's the way I was brought up by immigrant grandparents and first generation parents who valued the ideals of this great country of ours. My father was a Republican, my mother a Democrat, our dinner table was lively. They knew who each other was and respected it.
"I may strongly disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Voltaire had nothing on my family.
But hate. That's another matter. Hate is destructive. Hate prevents progress. Hate is just irrational in this circumstance. Hate festers and spreads like a cancer. Hate kills. Ask an ordinary citizen who claims to hate the Clintons why. They lie, they say. Lie? Show me a lie that matters. Even if you do, how does that translate to hate?

Post a CommentGreat article...you bring out some very well thought out points!
Interesting article. I never hated the Clintons; I was understanding when Bill explained his sex addiction and said he got health. I lost respect for Hillary after her cold heartedness to Code Pink ladies on the war in Iraq. Where is the female qualities of love, compassion and empathy for the wives, mothers, sisters, daughters, female friends of our troops and Iraqi ladies, I wondered. Her disgusting behavior during this campaign~selling citizens with lies has made me feel I am in an abusive relationship with a politician. She even showed up in a nightmare one night, after all her verbal attacks and lies. I had knots in my stomach when I checked the news, fearing what garbage she dished up today. It is hard to feel love for a person who is abusive; the opposite of love is hate. No citizen should fear anyone wanting to be their president. Ms. Clinton needs some psychologist help; has all the traits of a psychotic person.
I noticed that these two really bring out strong emotions for and against them. I like them. Perhaps some of the hatred seems to come from people who wanted to see this couple crumble and disappear. The Clintons did the complete opposite and are thriving in spite of their hard times.
Okay, since I wrote an article about Hilary being the Pinocchio of Politics, I may be perceived to be in that "hate" camp, though I prefer to think of the feeling as "intense dislike." I have been trying to put my finger on exactly why I feel this way toward Hilary but it is more visceral than logical. As much as I love to psychoanalyze myself and others, I do not think it is envy in my case. Still, I thoroughly enjoyed your article, Louisa, and will be following your work more closely in the future.
You expressed it so well. All politicians are ambitious, maybe too ambitious. We wouldn't have a young guy like Obama as the front runner if he hadn't been too ambitious at such an early age. That comes with a price, hatred from the losers. Clintons are no exception. Unfortunately, that is the way world runs. At the end, I hope once the election is over, we can all forget about personal jealousy and work for the people.
Simply wonderful job here, great points!!!!
Great article I agree with it!!!!! hate and envy they are hardest ones to change change is good maybe your article will change a few or least soften them !!!!!
Great article! Can we just write your name in for President. I am still hoping Clinton will be put on as VP.
I hate "Hate" too !!!...but I really don't want another president that is going to send all of our jobs overseas...and put more tax shelter for the rich..so they can become "richer"...knocking the middle man totally out !....I sure do wish we had more to choose from "president" wise !!!...:)
this is wonderful! if there's anything i hate--it's hatred! people forget that other people are people, too. if you get a chance, please read my poem called 'Risk'. it's about prejudice. you did a great job expressing yourself! (btw--i'm going to subscribe to you and i've added you to my favorites.)
