Haunted America: The Ghosts of Honolulu, Hawaii & the Oahu Ghost Tours

From the Spirited Lady in Red Who Haunts the Hilton Hawaii to the Haunted Interstate H-1

Sherri Granato
Honolulu, Hawaii is the perfect vacation and honeymoon destination because it is so visually stunning, romantic, and by many, it is considered paradise on Earth. However Honolulu, Hawaii also has a few deep dark secrets hidden deep within the beautiful scenery and architecture that makes it one of the most haunted destinations on the planet. These mystifying spirits will make the strongest man weak, and paralyze the faint of heart with a fear for the spirit world like no other.

Numerous destinations throughout Honolulu can be added to the list of places to see paranormal activity up close and personal; after all it is considered to be the city that is the most ghost ridden on the island. In fact the whole metropolis seems to have been affected in some way from catastrophic events throughout history that deal with some form of suffering or horrifying ordeal in one way or another.

Hilton Hawaii Village Hotel

A female volcano pit dweller of supernatural attributes has made her presence known to all that dare to cross her path. According to Hawaiian religion, the ghostly lady, known by the locals as Pele, is the fire, lightning, dance, and volcano goddess that openly appears to visitors in many different forms from young to old. She is such a deep part of the ancient Hawaiian culture that she is often talked about and included in Hawaiian mythology. The goddess relishes the deep color of rubies, and is often spotted in a red gown walking quietly through the hallways possibly in search of her fire pit.

The legend has it that in 1959, a Hilton employee escorted the beautiful lady to her room, and before he could extend his arm, and open his gloved hand for a tip, she vanished right before his eyes in a chilling mist right at the entrance to her room. Many of the locals feel that she is the ghost of a woman murdered in a tower room, while others say she is none other than the volcano goddess herself, Madame Pele who resides deep within the active volcano Kīlauea. Throughout the years, both employees and guests of the famous Hilton have caught glimpses of the troubled ghostly image in red. To make reservations at the haunted Hilton, go to:

The Sacred Hearts Academy

Founded in 1909, the historic Roman Catholic college preparatory school for girls has had its share of ghostly figures from the grounds to the bell tower, but the stairs behind the chapel has been one of the most reported hot spots for face to face ghostly sightings. Here, an apparition of a nun is pronounced in full view, and you can at times feel her touching your arm, and some have actually felt her breath on their face. The air becomes ice cold, and you can feel an impending sadness suddenly surround you as if it is going to smother you at some point. This is the very location where the nun met her untimely death from a fall sustained after a rickety stair railing failed to support her.

The gym is an attention getter, because you cannot ignore the bouncing balls that penetrate and echo off of the gymnasium walls by a small female child who quite simply wants to play. The problem is that she is no longer alive, and hasn't been for several decades. Faculty and students alike have been bombarded by the bouncing balls that eventually become scattered about the room for the spirit child who refuses to leave until you play back.

Interstate H-1 Honolulu, Hawaii

Hawaii's busiest freeway is the famous east to west Interstate H-1, and it is also the most haunted route on the island. The ghostly tale begins in 1953 when troubled workers dug through the mountain on a daily basis while apparitions of Hawaiian warriors did their best to frighten the road crew away. The men were continuously taunted by the spirits with angry appearances from the miffed apparitions who refused to be up heaved from their burial grounds deep within the mountain. Scared workers walked off the job without question which made the excavation turn into a seven year long event.

New crews were hired to continue with the project that was quickly becoming known as one of the most haunted in the area. Endless piles of ancient human bones were found from the non-stop digging. These bones were considered sacred, thus making digging a problematic issue for the worried crew. The warrior spirits were highly agitated by the presence of the workers, and the crew started to rebel by refusing to dig any further. Eventually the highway was completed in 1960. To this day travelers claim that when you go through the tunnel you can hear the cries of the still agitated spirits that were unearthed from their sacred resting place deep within the mountain.

Honolulu Weekly offers ghost hunters Haunted Honolulu, which is a featured section printed around Halloween with reported encounters of ghostly sightings and creepy tales from locals and visitors that pour in non-stop from all around the island.
