Haunted America: The Stone Lion Inn Bed & Breakfast in Guthrie, Oklahoma
Murder Mystery Weekends, Dinner, Breakfast & Ghosts
The Stone Lion Inn was once a family home that was built in 1907 by F.E.Houghton to offer adequate shelter for his large family. The completion of the mansion came at a cost of $11,900. The 8,000 square foot, 4-level home was the most expensive house built in Guthrie, Oklahoma, but it comfortably fit the twelve Houghton children and their parents. Mr. Houghton had an eight year old daughter named Augusta who became ill with whooping cough and died soon after a nurse gave her the wrong medicine.
Becky Luker purchased the grand estate in 1986, and immediately began renovations, wanting to give the home a feel of its original grace and beauty. However, the spirits had other ideas that seemed to imply that they were happy with the place just as it was.
Soon after the renovations began, so did the unexplainable noises. Loud footsteps could be heard coming from the back staircase in the early morning hours, and various doors open and close at free will. The police department was often summoned to the Luker home, but Becky quickly realized that the intruders in her home were not of the living, and were instead trouble making ghosts that wanted to be acknowledged.
The third floor appears to be a hot spot for visitors from the other side as noises and strange occurrences are a very common event in the Victorian mansion. One of the biggest mysteries surrounds Becky's son and one of the closets in this area. He would neatly put his toys away before going to bed each night, only to wake up the next morning, discovering that the ghosts had scattered them about.
The most intriguing story involves the ghost of a little girl that is believed to be the 8 year old daughter of Mr. Houghton. Augusta is rumored to run through the halls, and visiting with the guests at the Stone Lion Inn.
The ghost of Augusta's father, F.E. Houghton has been seen a few times in the basement area and throughout the house. A faint smell of pipe tobacco has been witnessed in one of the front sitting rooms of the inn, and many guests report strange and spontaneous smells within the home.
Guests have reported that a child like figure has attempted to tuck them into bed, while other complaints have involved a child jumping or playing on the beds when there were no children staying at the Inn at the time. The sound of a wooden ball rolling across the wooden floors outside of guests rooms can be heard echoing throughout the hallways.
Although Augusta's ghost has never actually been seen, guests at the Stone Lion Inn report that they can sense that a child is in the room with them. Common reports include seeing movement from the corner of their eye, but upon turning to look, nothing is there.
Today, the older Houghton siblings believe strongly that the ghost of there sister Augusta haunts the Bed & Breakfast that was once her home, and they confirmed that they used the same large closet on the third floor to also hold their toys. They also stated that the back step's where Becky Luker has heard footsteps are the same stairs that they had used when sneaking out of bed to go and play at 2:00 in the morning.
If you are a ghost hunter or just enjoy a bit of mystery and intrigue then the Stone Lion Inn is the perfect location to find it. The murder mystery weekend is expensive, but entertaining. Starting at $181.00, couples receive full amenities along with a packet describing the details of the planned murder mystery that they will be involved with.
Approximately 20 to 40 guests will participate, and the festivities begin with cocktail hour in the library. A seven course dinner by a relaxing fire is enjoyed as the clues start to unravel for the guests. A full gourmet breakfast served with French pressed coffee is served to the surviving guests at 8:00 a.m., followed by ghost stories and a brief history of the haunted mansion and Stone Lion Inn Bed & Breakfast.
The stately rooms are simply elegant with a full array of Victorian furnishings, private baths, sitting rooms, antique claw foot tubs, and a host of spirits to keep you entertained all night.

We stayed here Saturday June 12th & 13th . We attended the murder mystery party on one evening and the Pollard Theatre on the other. Everything was outstanding! Anyone with any compaints obviously has no appreciation for authenticity or history, and would be probably be more at home at a motel 6. I plan to come back another weekend. Some good shopping in the historic district. OK, heres where it gets good. Saturday night after the murder mystery dinner, (really funny, we went to the graveyard for a pretend Memorial Service for Elmer McCurdy; it's a true story), we were ready to go to bed around 12:30am and there was a paranormal team upstairs with some awsome eqipment set up. They were very nice and explained everything. They had a infared camera set up in the hallway wired to a laptop in there room. We couldn't believe our eyes at what we saw, ORB'S! little balls of light flying around everywhere! And one of the guys left a recorder going in his room, and when he reviewed it, he
Don't waste your money going to this Run down House !! Food was not that great... NO soap in bathrooms and towels that should be rags... We also encountered Wasp problems in our Room upstairs in the Stone Lion Inn. There are alot of misleading stuff from their website !!!
sorry it cut me off ;(
Later she tells a story about how a guest was stung by a wasp and had to depart. She says they had to spray the upstairs with insecticide to kill the nest. Holy Crap! This is why we were having trouble breathing. We had been poisoned and NO ONE thought we should be informed. I was furious and was having a difficult time sitting there. I was telling my pals that I needed to leave and she scolded and shushed me. I was still stewing, talking low and trying to remain calm but she turned back to us so I quickly left the room. The hostess came out a short time later to get me to return but also continuing to scold. She informed us that the 80+ year old people in the room could not hear - which had more to do with people needing to speak up and not because of us. I was attempting to explain but she would not hear anything. She never once asked about my wellbeing. I finally told her to return to her guests and that I was not going back in. I had to tell her several t
Actual Poisoning at the Stone Lion Inn.
We arrived to a very rundown area. We parked on the street because there was no parking lot. There was no warm greeting when we entered the building and we were ushered into a backroom by someone who failed to introduce themselves. She requested payment and passed out character clues. She led us upstairs to our rooms and quickly disappeared. The closet in the wedding suite was full of lumber and supplies. Outside, on what used to be a balcony, was more lumber. While exploring upstairs everyone began experiencing respiratory problems which worsened the longer we remained. I felt like there was string in my throat and we were coughing and having trouble breathing. We thought perhaps it was a cleaning product or dust. It was becoming very uncomfortable so we returned downstairs for a drink to clear our throats and spent the next 45 minutes mostly outside.
For hors d'oeuvres they served chips, salsa, taquitos, cheese sticks, mini quiches, and b
Do NOT stay there! It was one of the worst experiences my friends and I could have wasted our money on. There was no paranormal activity. The drunkard of a hostess swore at us and wouldn't let people use the restrooms. The dinner was basically Lean Cuisines heated up and there was no alcohol provided. Not to mention Guthrie is turning into a meth town anyway. Don't waste your time stopping at this site - let that crummy town and the people in it waste away unless they want to offer better service!
We went on a tour there this fall and the little girl who died was named Ilene and she was accidentally overdosed. We were doing EVPs and she responded on 3 different occasions to having her name called so if you go call her name out if taping, she may just answer you. More information is on our website moonlightparanormalgroup.com or youtube moonlightparanormal
THE CHILD YOU ARE SPEAKING OF, DOES LIKE TO PLAY AND IS VERY MISCHEVIOUS. SHE IS NOT TO BE FEARED, AND THE OTHER SPIRITS THAT ARE SPOKEN OF, WELL LETS SAY THERE ARE MORE THAN THEY REALIZE, THERE IS A DOOR LOCATED SOMEWHERE IN THAT HOUSE I SAW THE EPISODE OF TAPS, AND TO MY RECOLECTION, AT THE BOTTOM OF THE HOUSE TO THE BACK OF THE HOUSE. IS WHERE I FOUND THERE TO BE THE MOST ACTIVITY. NOT JUST ONLY UPSTAIRS. I BELIEVE THAT IS WHERE YOU WILL FIND YOUR ANSWERS.. BUT BE AWARE THAT YOU ARE BEING WATCHED ALL THE TIME. I SAY THIS ONLY OUT OF RESPECT NOT TO SCARE TO FRIGHTEN ANYONE. I WOULD LOVE TO COME AND VISIT SOMET IME I WAS RAISED IN OKLAHOMA AND LEFT YEARS AGO. VISIT AND HAVE FAMILY THERE AND I AM VERY SENSITIVE TO THESE THINGS. RESPECFULLY J
Historical documents actually show that the young child that died in the house was not Augusta; in fact, she grew up and went to college, got married and had children of her own. There was a young child about that age that did die in the house but the child's name is not known nor is the cause of death. TAPS came to the Stone Lion Inn in the second season of their show Ghost Hunters (an original Sci-Fi series) and did get some very interesting EVPs which sound very much like a child is saying, "Come find me." Not so much creepy as it sounds like she or he is attempting to play with them. You can find clips from that episode on YouTube if you are interested in hearing the EVPs for yourself.
