Working late one night on the Gettysburg College campus, two young adminstrators finished up and pushed the elevator button, intending to go home and enjoy a peaceful night, instead of going to the first floor the elevator made a bypass straight to the basement. As the elevator doors opened the two men stumbled into another world. The basement, normally used for storage, was alive with doctors, orderlies, and the cries of wounded soldiers. In a far corner lay a pile of amputated arms and legs. In a panick both men started pounding the buttons on the elevator. When the slow moving elevator finally reached the main floor, both men rushed to the security office. The guard on duty rode the elevator with the two men back down to the basement. Expecting to find students in the midst of a fraternity prank they instead found the basement empty except for the storage boxes.
Not to be outdone by the ghosts of Pennsylvania Hall, Stevens Hall has it's own faithful apparition. Named Blue Boy, because of the pallor of his skin, has been seen for well over 100 years. Legend has it that Blue Boy was one of the town kids that frequented the campus. The young ladies of Stevens Hall took pity on the poor child, he was terribly abused at home, several nights a week Blue Boy made his way to campus where the female students hid him in their dorm rooms. One bitterly cold winter night while the headmistress did room check the female students had Blue Boy stand on the landing outside the window. The headmistress stayed longer to chat than usual. Almost a half an hour later the girls opened the window to let blue boy in. He wasn't on the landing. Fearing that he had fallen they ran down the stairs and outside. They searched the building and grounds the next day but no trace of Blue Boy was found. To this day sightings of a boy, blue in the face, as if frozen, persist.
A unnamed civil war general has made several appearances at various colleges plays and performances. He casually strolls across the stage during evening productions and takes a seat in the front row. He seems to prefer the middle set of chairs, whether occupied or not.
During the Civil War the campus of Gettysburg College (formerly Pennsylvania College) was used as a hospital and military fortress for the Union Soldiers. Even thought the Civil War was fought over 150 years ago, seems that no one told the soldiers and staff haunting Gettysburg College.
