Haunted Dolls: Ghosts and Spirits that Haunt Us

Rebecca Said
I am one of those people that believe in the paranormal, and think that there are some things in this world that cannot be easily explained away with science. I started believing when I was only eight years old and saw a ghost. I was just sitting at the family kitchen table and a transparent looking male figure came into the room. We both exchanged glances for what seemed to be an eternity, and then he left the room. He had a paint palette in one hand and a brush in the other. Knowing first hand that ghosts do exist, I am interested in learning more about places and items that are claimed to be haunted.

Dolls seem to be a fairly common item to be haunted, and I do believe that ghosts or spirits seem to be attracted to them. When I was a little girl, I used to have a lot of dolls and I just loved to play with them. One day my mother brought a used doll home for me as a surprise. I noticed that she was different almost immediately. I could feel some kind of intense energy coming from her and it actually frightened me. No matter where she was in my bedroom it seemed as though she was watching me. Sometimes she would not be in the same position as I left her, and at times she would be in a different location altogether. I began having nightmares about her, and finally told my mother about it. Happily, we got rid of the doll on that very day, and everything went back to normal. As a child, I had no idea that haunted dolls even existed. Yet, when I read about haunted dolls as an adult it looks like my experience was pretty standard.

People who have experienced haunted dolls usually will have some complaints such as finding that the doll frequently changes positions or locations. But there have been more extreme cases in which they hear the doll talking or crying, moving right in front of them and even physically threatening them. A good example of this is "Robert", who was the lifelong companion of painter Robert Eugene Otto. It was all very well documented and they even have footage of him on tape. He is now kept at The East Martello Museum, and the workers have complained that the doll will actually follow them and they had to place him in a sealed case. Yet, not only is he haunting the museum but he is still haunting the family home he lived in before being brought to the museum. They sold the home and the new owners woke up in the middle of the night to find "Robert" at the end of their bed yielding a knife. The new owners have fled the home because they are so afraid of the doll. It has also been reported by people walking by the house, that they have seen "Robert" watching and scowling from the windows.

I have seen haunted dolls being sold on online auction sites, but I do not recommend purchasing one. I think the stories are very interesting. Although, when it comes right down to it, why in the world would you want to own something that is haunted? You never know what you are getting yourself into. You may get a friendly benign spirit or it could be a demon doll like "Robert".

    Hi Rebecca,
Chilling article. A friend recently showed me a "puppet" soap that she had inherited from her elderly aunt. I jumped out of my skin when I saw this disgusting face staring back at me! It was a soap of the puppet " Archie Andrews" created by Pears and it was completely scary. Imagine my surprise when my friend informed me that the puppet had actually been used in a very old horror movie! I wasn't surprised anymore by my own reaction as it was simply horrible and I told her to shut it back in the box. Perhaps, there's more to that soap than she knows!

I agree with you when you said "why in the world would you want to own anything haunted." To be very honest, I find dolls to be rather creepy too--yes it is funny for me to say... However I have never really given much thought to an unusual number of dolls attracting odd energies.
    Interesting article.

Ha! I shouldn't have read this. Dolls have always given me the willies, even when I was a child.
