Haunted Happenings in Gettysburg, PA

Replete with historic sites known to have once been the scenes of immense human suffering, Gettysburg PA is an ideal place to visit this Halloween for those with a penchant for the paranormal.

Due to the popularity of the haunted ghost tours, advance reservations are strongly recommended if not required in some instances.

It should also be noted that many of the tours are not suitable for small children or the particularly squeamish.

Sleepy Hollow of Gettysburg
The "Sleepy Hallow of Gettysburg" ghost tours run year round and encompass Baltimore and High Streets as well as Seminary Ridge.

As of 2010 the "Baltimore and High Streets" tour departs nightly at 8:30 pm from the front parking lot of Dobbins House. Admission to the "Baltimore and High Streets" tour is $7.00 per person plus a 10% amusement tax.

The "Seminary Ridge" tour departs promptly at 8:00 pm Thursdays through Sundays from the front steps of General Robert E. Lee's headquarters. Admission to the "Seminary Ridge" tour is $8.00 per person.

Civil War Hauntings
"Civil War Hauntings" has several different tour options with all tours starting from "The Colton Motel" located on 232 Steinwehr Avenue.

What is nice about the "Civil War Hauntings" tours is that participants are given complimentary use of an EMF meter so that they may conduct their own paranormal investigation throughout the tour.

As of 2010 admission to the "Civil War Hauntings" tours are $8.00 per adult plus a 10% amusement tax. Children under the age of 7 are admitted for free with a paying adult and receive a free glow in the dark bracelet.

They also offer a "Ghost Tour and Dinner" package for groups of 15 or more people. The package consists of a tour and dinner at "Dino's Restaurant." In regards to dinner, the group can choose from one of two options.

The first dinner option is a tossed salad served with garlic bread and a choice of vegetarian lasagna, meat lasagna or stuffed shells.

The second dinner option consists of all you can eat cheese or pepperoni pizza. Both meal options include choice of either soft drink or coffee. The adult package price is $17.99 per person and $8.99 per child ages 7 and under.

Farnsworth House
Considered to be one of the most haunted bed and breakfasts in America the "Farnsworth House" has a sinister symphony of hair raising activities, tours and packages.

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the "Farnsworth House" is actually a working 9 room bed and breakfast with 5 of those rooms being listed as "haunted."

The Inn has an authentically restored dining room that is open 7 days a week from 5:00 pm until 9:00 pm, a tavern, outdoor gardens with running stream and other amenities. The open air garden and stream area, like the guest rooms is reputedly haunted as well.

All new for 2010 is the "Séance Room" located in the front area of the on-site bookstore. Visitors to the "Séance Room" can partake in a recreated Civil War séance.

The events that occur at this séance are often so disturbing and visually striking that it is not recommended for the timid nor children of tender years. As a matter of fact children under the age of 12 are not admitted into the "Séance Room" under any circumstances.

There are ghost hunts held nightly at 8:45 pm and 10:30 pm. The tour prices include the use of several pieces of high tech ghost hunting equipment such as night vision sensors, thermal sensor digital recorders and infrared viewers.

Evening walking tours that involve a guide in period costume taking visitors throughout the town by lantern are also very popular tour options as is a visit to the "Mourning Theater."

The on-site "Mourning Theater" is a 19th century viewing parlor where participants listen to costumed guides speak of the dead and display a collection of 19th century mourning antiquities. The presentation takes one hour and no one under the age of 7 is admitted.

As of 2010 admission to the "Mourning Room" is $9.00 per person plus a 10% amusement tax. The "Mourning Room" hours of operation vary and tend to take place only on the weekends so it is best to call in advance of one's trip.

Ghostly Images of Gettysburg
"Ghostly Images of Gettysburg" offers several 90 minute guided walking tours led by storytellers dressed in period costume.

Tour program offerings include; the "Jennie Wade House", the "Civil War Orphanage", Family Friendly Daytime Tour and Fireside Ghost Stories.

As of 2010 admission to each walking tour is $8.50 for adults and $5.00 for children ages 6 to 8. The walking tours run nightly from March through November.
