Haunted Houses, Halloween Mazes and More in Northeast Ohio: A to Z

Sarah A.
This is yet another installment in my series of articles regarding haunted houses and attractions in Ohio. I have attempted to make lists of the haunted houses and attractions in all of Ohio that are as accurate and comprehensive as possible. Each installment focuses on a different region in Ohio. If you are interested in my other installments, check out my content producer page.

Below is my guide to the haunted houses and attractions in Northeast Ohio. All attractions are listed in alphabetical order. I also included a little information on each attraction.

7 Floors of Hell (Cleveland)- This attraction is rated as one of the best in the nation. In fact, it has won several awards. It consists of seven haunted houses in one location. This year the haunts are The Cemetery, Blackout, The Butcher Shop, Psycho Circus in 3D, The House of Nightmares, The Crypt, and Insane Asylum. The owners say that although this attraction is a lot of fun it is also scary. Therefore, children under the age of ten need to be accompanied by an adult. I have heard nothing but good things about this attraction and I plan to attend someday.

Bloodview (Broadview Heights)- This haunt is supported by the Broadview Heights Lions Club and is ran by The Legion of Terror. They pride themselves in being a performance or a show rather than just a haunted house. The staff uses no mask or scripts so every show if different. Visitors first enter the Gore House, then travel on to the cemetery path leading to Elder Wood and finally into the Main House. All proceeds go to charity. This attraction is not recommended for children.

Canfield Scaregrounds (Canfield)- This attraction has a little bit of everything including the Canfield Haunted House, Haunted Hayride, free rides, live entertainment, food, and much more. The haunted attractions are not super-scary either, so children may be able to attend. There is definitely something for the whole family.

Dark Wind Woods (North Lawrence)- This attraction is a trail through woods that are purported to be haunted. Some consider this attraction to be the best in the area. In fact, it has been rated as one of the best in the state.

Fear Forest Haunted Hayride (Lordstown)- This haunted hayride consists of a ride through 86-acres of frights. In all, the ride is over a mile long. One of the highlights of the hayride is the vortex tunnel.

Field of Screams (Eastlake)- This haunt is located at Classic Park Stadium. It is a brand new attraction this year so there is not much information available on it.

Fortress of Fear (Garrettsville)- This haunt recently added a second attraction last year, Fearonia. Fortress of Fear is a haunted house that takes visitors through the dark and narrow corridors of a demented castle. Fearonia takes visitors through a factory that hasn't been open in decades and is purported to be haunted.

Frightworld (Painesville)- Formerly known as Nightmare in Painesville, this haunt is located at the Lake County Fairgrounds. It includes eight haunted attractions in one: Dead and Breakfast, Night Terror, The Fear Factory, Urban Legends, Hillbilly Carnage, Kingdom of Darkness, Fright Zone, and Godards Voodoo Island. As of this time, the owners are saying that Frightworld will not be open for the 2007 season. However, they are planning on opening back up in the future. Therefore, I went ahead and included it in the list.

Haunted Hollow and Maze of Terror (Cleveland)- This haunt is a massive attraction that offers two haunts in one. Haunted Hallow offers more than twenty rooms of fright.. The Maze of Terror encompasses some six-thousand square feet of trails, dead ends, and wrong turns. On site is also the Morgue Museum which used to be the old Cuyahoga County Morgue before it was shut down. Children under eight are not recommended to attend.

Haunted Schoolhouse and Haunted Laboratory (Akron)- In all, these two attractions have a total of seven floors of terror. The Haunted Schoolhouse is a three-story old school building. The Haunted Laboratory is an old four-story building that used to be used by the University of Akron. Now, it is home to many frights including a walk on a catwalk, a wind tunnel, and spinning black holes. Both houses are changed up each year. I have heard really good things about this attraction and I definitely want to visit.

Haunted Train and Hobo Path (Wellington)- This haunt takes visitors on a spooky train ride to the haunted woods. There, visitors detrain to trek through the haunted trail. No flashlights are allowed. Survivors get to drink cider and roast marshmallows once they reach the bonfire. This haunt is not super-scary and even young children will enjoy it.

Hudson Haunted House (Hudson)- This attractions is ran by the Hudson Jaycees. It includes winding corridors, a maze, and a visit to The Black Hole. This haunt also features two children's matinee shows with the lights on.

Massacre in Medina (Seville)- This haunt includes more than three acres with both indoor and outdoor scares. All profits go to charity.

Medina Haunted Castle (Medina)- Last year was the first year for this haunt. The price of admission includes a free round of mini golf. As of now, their website is down. Some are questioning whether or not the attraction will be open again this year. I was not able to confirm if it would or would not be open. However, I decided to go ahead and include it in the list.

Nightmare in the Wilderness (Lodi)- This haunt first takes visitors on a half-mile hayride into the wilderness. Survivors then go on to the more than one-mile-long haunted trail encountering everything from mazes to vortex tunnels.

Old Haunted State Street School (Vermillion)- Each year, the show at this haunt is changed. The ghosts at the attraction are all volunteers, most of which are kids. Proceeds go to Friends of Harbour Town, Inc. While waiting, there is arcades games and face painting.

Phantom Manor (Geneva-on-the-Lake)- This attraction is owned and operated by the same people who run Fortress of Fear. It is located in a house that is said to be truly haunted. It is open all summer rather than just during Halloween season. It is not recommended for children under the age of ten.

Rockin-R-Ranch (Columbia Station)- This haunt is actually four attractions in one: The Famous Haunted Hayride, The Haunted Barn, the all-new Night Creepers House, and the Family Fun House. The haunts are not super-scary and are geared towards families. There is definitely something for the whole family.

Screamfest07 (Parkman)- This attraction is ran by Furhys Haunts Inc. This year, it features an all new haunted maze. In the past the haunt used to be free. However, in order to give a better attraction, the owners are asking for admission this year.

The Carnival of Horrors (Cleveland)- This attraction is located at Blossom Music Center and is, in fact, four haunts in one. The Oblivion Cage Maze is full of dead ends and wrong turns. The Fun House is a very intense haunted house full of clowns, special effects, and scares. The Freakshow in 3-D Terrorvision is the only house of its kind in the area offering visitors a fully 3-D walk-through haunted house. The Wicked Woods is a rather unique experience. Visitors are given a flashlight and left on their own to find their way out. However, they must watch their backs because monsters are watching and waiting. Could you make it out? I've heard really good things about this attraction and plan on attending in the future.

The Factory of Terror (Canton)- This haunt is located in an old, abandoned factory. It has been reported that many men have died in the factory while working. Also, it has been verified that during World War I and the flu epidemic, people in the area were dying so quickly that they could not be buried fast enough. At the time, the building was an ice factory so thousands of bodies were moved to the basement to be packed in ice until they could be buried. Many believe the factory is haunted. The attraction now consists of two haunts: The Haunted Halls of Hercules and The Labyrinth of Darkness. During the season, there are various special events such as a trick-or-treat event where children can come and get candy as well as go through the haunts with the lights on. I have been to this attraction before and absolutely loved it. The day we went, there was tons of live entertainment. The atmosphere was awesome. Also, I want to mention that the factory itself is extremely freaky. I highly recommend this attraction.

The Haunted Forest of Carousel (Sheffield Village)- This haunt takes visitors on a trail that is nearly a half-mile in length and full of frights. Each year, the haunt is revamped. The owners recommend that children under the age of ten be accompanied by an adult. However, if someone does chicken out, there is free babysitting available.

The Legend of Scare Creek (East Sparta)- This haunt is located at the Bear Creek Amphitheater. It is Ohio's third longest running haunted attraction and one of the world's longest attractions, lasting more than ninety minutes. This year, the haunt feature three attractions: Famous Haunted Hay Ride, The House of Nightmares, The Walk Through Forest of Fear.

The Stalker Haunted Corn Maze (Bolivar)- This haunt is located at Burfield Wiseman Farms. It includes both a trek through the corn maze and a hayride on the "Eerie" canal.

The Trail of Terror (Bolivar)- This haunted trail takes visitors on a mile-long trail through the haunted woods. The trail includes clouds of fog, strobe lights, monsters, maniacs, clowns, tunnels and much more. Children under eight are not admitted.
