Below is my guide to the haunted houses and attractions in Southeast Ohio. All attractions are listed in alphabetical order. I also included a little information on each attraction.
East Liverpool Area Jaycees Haunted House (East Liverpool)- This is the longest running haunt in the area. It has been in operation for nearly forty years. All proceeds go to the Special Olympics and American Red Cross.
Federal Valley Fright Nights (Stewart)- This haunt includes two attractions in one: the Vault of Unexplained Horrors and Athens Mental Asylum. On site is also the Museum of Local Myths, which is free to enter. All proceeds go to Federal Valley Resource Center, a nonprofit organization dedicated to maintaining the historic Stewart school campus.
Forest of Fright (Philo)- Visitors at this haunt first ride the Ghoul Bus to the depths of the forest. There, there they are left on their own to navigate the twisted trails of the maze. The haunt also features a large bonfire and concessions. It is not recommended for young children.
Gates of Terror (Lancaster)- This haunt includes two indoor haunted houses, The Cemetery of Lost Souls, The Haunted Corn Maze, and The Haunted Maze of Darkness. There is also live entertainment, concessions, a bonfire, and an open air theater. This attraction is not recommended for children under ten. However, there is Halloween Land, a non-scary area for children. There is also free babysitting available. Throughout the season, the haunt has many special events such as OSU weekend and student weekend. On Halloween, there is a special "extreme" haunt. Children under thirteen are not recommended at this event.
Greenfield Township Fire Department Annual Haunted House (Patriot)- This haunt is hosted by the Greenfield Township Firefighters. Each year, they promise a bigger and better haunted house. In the past the haunt featured a three-dimensional trip through a maze.
Haunted Corn Maze (Piketon)- This haunt is located at The Seasons Harvest Corn Maze. In October, the maze is turned into a haunted attraction. It is not super-scary. Families will have a lot of fun at this one.
Haunted Farm (Pleasantville)- This haunt is located on a farm that is purported to be haunted. It is home to two haunted attractions: the Barn Maze and the Haunted Hayride. Both of which have been completely redesigned for the 2007 season. The haunt also features bonfires, live entertainment, and the Crow's Nest gift shop.
Haunted Hill View Hayride (Shadyside)- This haunted hayride is sponsored by the Shadyside Band Patrons. There are concessions available and children receive a treat bag at the end of the ride. This haunt is family oriented and it is fun for all ages.
Nightmare on Main Street (Logan)- This haunt is expertly designed and includes thirteen rooms of frights. It is not recommended for young children.
Portsmouth Jaycees Haunted House (Portsmouth)- This haunted house is held in the Portsmouth Jaycees Building. All proceeds go to the area Jaycees which uses the funds for service work. There is also a canned food drive that takes place at the haunted house. All food collected goes to Portsmouth area non-profit organizations to help feed the community.
Scare University (Athens)- The city of Athens just announced the opening of this haunted house less than a week ago. It will be held in the city-owned armory building and operated by the same people who run Scare University in Nelsonville. The repairs to the building and planning for the haunt are currently under way. The theme this year is said to be the Carnival of Terror. It is set to open the first week of October. The city as well as Ohio University students are looking forward to the haunt. It should be a nice edition to the area, especially during the huge annual Halloween party that takes place at the university. In the past, the armory hosted a beer garden.
Scare University (Nelsonville)- This haunt is sponsored by Nelsonville Restoration Foundation and Avalon Animal Rescue. It is located in an old school building. Each year, the attraction features new haunts. This year, the overall theme of the haunt is Isle of the Undead. The attraction also features live bands and contests each night.
The Haunted Ariel Theatre (Gallipolis)- This haunt is located in the Ariel Theatre, a 110 year old Victorian building. The building even has an underground tunnel system. The haunt features three floors of mazes, rooms, tunnels, and a creepy elevator ride.
Wells Township Haunted House (Brilliant)- This haunt is located in an old house where an elderly woman passed away. Because she had no family, her death wasn't discovered for weeks. By that time, her nineteen cats had nearly devoured her body because they had nothing else to eat. Now the house has been turned into a haunted attraction and the old lady is believed to still haunt the house. It includes three floors and nearly thirty rooms of frights.
Westbrooke Haunted Asylum (Bridgeport)- This haunt is located at the Westbrooke Asylum and Medical Testing Facility. In its day, it was a very well respected facility. However, after a while, it soon became notorious for its deplorable conditions and horrific, unethical experiments. It shut its doors after a murderous riot in 1967 that claimed dozens of lives. It is now believed to be one of the nation's most haunt places. This year marks the fortieth anniversary of the riot and lockdown. The owners and operators are promising an exceptionally scary haunt this year. It is not recommended for children. I have heard nothing but good about this attraction and I definitely want to attend.
