Haunted Houses in Southeastern Michigan

Downriver-Detroit Halloween Attractions

Lee Vines
There are plenty of haunted houses in southeastern Michigan, but how about Halloween attractions? What is the difference? For starters, a Halloween attraction isn't the same haunted house you attended as a kid. Gone are the nights when you lobbied for permission to spend 4 or 5 bucks on a jaunt through a couple of decorated semi trucks. Gone too, any guilt you had as your mother waited dutifully in the car. Say sayonara to the thrill and fear you felt standing in the dark, dipping temps, listening to big kids talk about stuff more shocking than anything the haunted house sponsors could've cooked up. In their place, Halloween attractions hold the promise of fun filled days for all ages. The average Halloween attraction has corn mazes, pony rides, pumpkins and food, according to Haunted House Association (HHA), a trade organization for the national haunted house industry. It's a new take on traditional harvest celebrations, and it's growing. The HHA estimates there are about 2,000 haunted attractions nationwide, with 300 amusement parks and over 1,000 charity groups organizing Halloween events.

What's more, haunted houses in southeastern Michigan are following national trends. Each year, more haunted houses enter the fray with highly specialized themes and elaborate displays. The HHA says the target demographic is 18-34 year olds. In other words, kids who grew up on haunts are willing to spend the average admission price of $15 for thrills and chills, but want more bang for the buck. To stay competitive, haunted houses in southeastern Michigan offer extras like VIP packages, which allow visitors to jump to the front of the line, or combination packages, which let people pick and choose their events. However, not all haunted houses are appropriate for young children.

That's where the Halloween attraction has its appeal. Parents with young children find apple bobbing and hay rides a more family friendly option. Luckily, you can attend Halloween attractions and haunted houses right here in southeastern Michigan. You can still find the haunted semi-trucks too.
