Haunted Niagara Falls Attractions: Olde Angel Inn at Niagara-on-the-Lake

R. M. Dubuc
The Olde Angel Inn, located in the historic Niagara-on-the-Lake area in Ontario, Canada, is rich in both history and reported hauntings. The ghost story of Captain Colin Swayze and his unfortunate end at The Angel Inn during the War of 1812 haunts the Olde Angel Inn, making this one of the most unique places to visit in the Niagara area.

The Haunted Olde Angel Inn

The Olde Angel Inn is allegedly haunted by the ghost of Captain Colin Swayze, a Canadian militia man during the War of 1812, who stayed behind to meet up with a woman who he believed to be his true love and found himself hiding in a barrel in the cellar of The Olde Angel Inn when American troops eventually used a bayonet to find him and subsequently kill Captain Swayze. May 1813 was not a good month for Captain Swayze and he perished that unfortunate day in the cellar of The Olde Angel Inn. Captain Swayze now allegedly haunts The Olde Angel Inn, causing disturbances when the British flag is not flying. As a precaution, the owners keep the British flag up at all times.

The Olde Angel Inn was burned to the ground in the War of 1812, and soon rebuilt by a man named John Ross in 1815. The early architecture remains to this day, offering guests a peek into what a British pub looked like in the 18th and 19th centuries. The brick walls, large wooden ceiling beams, and plank floors give The Olde Angel Inn a very authentic British pub feel.

Dining at The Olde Angel Inn

A visit to The Olde Angel Inn is not complete without trying one of their own brewed beers and some traditional British pub food. The Olde Angel Inn offers a variety of Angel Inn beers including an Angel Inn Red, Angel Inn Best Bitter, and an Angel Inn Lager, as well as other domestic draught choices. Bottled beer, imported draughts, and wines are also available.

Wooden tables are set among the dining rooms at The Olde Angel Inn, as well as seating at the bar. English pub fare is excellent, with a traditional British beer battered fish and chips ($13.49) served with hand cut fries, and peas and carrots being a favorite on my last visit. The Chicken Curry ($14.99) was also mouthwatering, homemade, and a great value. Bangers and Mash ($12.99), Steak and Kidney Pie ($12.99), and Shepherds Pie ($12.99) are other British pub food favorites at The Angel Inn. A dinner menu is offered after 5 pm, with prime rib, steaks, salmon, lamb, and chicken entrees available. Personally, the pub fare at The Olde Angel Inn is my favorite any time of day.

On the weekends, live entertainment is offered at The Olde Angel Inn at night. Local bands are typically featured, and the atmosphere is lively and fun on the weekends at The Angel Inn.

Lodging

In addition to being a great place to visit to meet the ghost of Captain Swayze, The Olde Angel Inn also offers overnight accomodations for those who dare sleep in the same building as Captain Swayze's ghost. Guests can choose one of five rooms upstairs at The Olde Angel Inn, with rates ranging from $89-$229 per night, depending on room accomodation and season. This is an affordable lodging option for those visiting Niagara-on-the-Lake, as many other local hotels and bed and breakfasts have much higher rates, and no ghostly perks.
