Haunted Places in Spokane, WA

1000 Steps

Josh Gillis
Throughout the time I have lived here in Spokane, WA I have heard many stories of haunted places and have never seemed to pay any attention to them until I heard one that really caught my attention. It is at a old cemetery. This place is probably 300 years old. It is called the Greenwood Cemetery and I found out that this place is right down the street from where I live!
I researched this place on the internet after I heard what happens at the Greenwood Cemetery. So my friend text-messaged me one day and told me that at this cemetery there is an old stairway that used to lead to the top of the cemetery to the top level. Due to renovations and improvements the cemetery has recently made nobody goes up those stairs anymore or are not supposed to from what I heart. Supposedly, whoever tries to go up those stairs at night can never make it to the top because some kind of ghost or a group of ghost lingers the stairs and it becomes to scary for anybody to continue their way up the stairs with real life ghosts in their face. I can't say that I would blame somebody for turning around and running the opposite directions going about 100mph. I would do the same. Well I did the same.
I went to the cemetery many times at night and it just seemed like something was watching me at all times. I could never really seem to find these steps however. So at first I thought that this was all just made up and these stories that so many people posted on the internet was just another hoax, a simple misguided idea that gets people spooked but never is really explained or determined true.
Well I was not to let this get me down. I was to search the whole cemetery for these steps and that is what I did. I went there in the daylight and looked for any opening in the woods that would suggest that there was once steps there that could have led to the top level of the cemetery. These steps supposedly hadn't been used in years and the cemetery had made many changes so I knew that this would not be an easy task for me.
Ironically I looked the whole day and couldn't find them until I was on my way home I noticed there was a bunch of snow covered steps right off of the street and it was most likely impossible to spot at night. This is when I knew I found the famous steps. I
Now that I have found the steps I needed to see if this was just an urban legend or if these steps were really haunted by ghosts that linger the cemetery. The night before I actual decided to go check these steps out I read all of the blogs on the internet and read all the stories so I could know what i was getting myself into. Supposedly when the spirits are close it will feel as if it is raining there will be a moist change of air pressure and you will then know that it is coming. I thought that concept was a joke. I have seen that on so many different scary movies that was simply a joke to me. However, the night I went I felt it.
The sky got darker then ever and it was a clear night. It seemed as if rain clouds went over by and there was lightning or something coming because you could feel this sort of energy like feeling coming your way. Then I felt rain drops and I knew it was raining because it was 20 degrees outside. By this point I was only to about the 5th or 6th step. I got up about half way and that is when a cloud of bright white came at me and it was filled with about 50 faces of people from women to children to old men and little boys. This was a very unique feeling and very scary to say the least. The person that went with me had already been back to the car. I wanted to see if this was all made up though. I was looking around trying to find a smoke machine or something that would suggest this all being fake and is just to scare off kids from going up the abandoned steps. I found nothing, however, and all of a sudden it was quite and then I heard a voice ask me "who are you" and "why are you here". That is the moment I ran down those stairs and to the car and sped off. I now believe that something spooky goes on in the Greenwood Cemetery. And I know what they nickname that place 1000 steps. Nobody will ever make it to the top. I will try again some day to make it to the top because I was not harmed and I do feel that this place is a genuinely haunted place.
I dare anybody that lives in the Spokane area to check it out. I do admit that I chicken'd out, but I do not believe that anybody can make it to the top of these steps. This place is creepy and will scare anybody and everybody. If you do not believe in ghost I don't suggest you check this place out. This will change your whole prospective on life. It sure changed mine.
