Located just off the Old National Road or US 40 in Brownsville, Nemacolin Castle was originally built over two hundred years ago as the area began to prosper due to the location on the Monongahela River. Although the Underground Railroad is rumored to have used Nemacolin Castle as a stop for many slaves on their way to freedom, there has never been any actual proof - although there are many hidden passageways and hiding places inside this haunted place! Built in various segments over the years by the Bowman family, one notable feature is the tall stone wall with jagged glass shards imbedded along the top - a strange security measure undertaken by the Bowman family who felt threatened possibly by the lower classes that lived outside their estate.
No one knows where they came from, but up to ten different ghosts have been sighted in Nemacolin Castle, many of them appearing in photographs taken by curious tourists who walk around the small estate or take special tours that highlight the haunted place. But have no fear, these ghosts are reported to be friendly and are not out to attack visitors - they just like to have company! This historic estate has been maintained in the same style and fashion as it was at the peak of its existence and is a beautiful place to visit - even if you're not interested in haunted places!
Special tours are held at Christmas and at Halloween by volunteers who will guide you around the haunted place and detail their encounters with the unearthly inhabitants, such as Elisabeth, a proper young Victorian-era lady and Mary, a seven-year-old mischievous little girl with long curly hair. If you don't want to attend during these times the castle is open to visitors daily.
So if you're looking for someplace different to visit in the way of haunted places, consider Nemacolin Castle in Brownsville, Pennsylvania. Whether you want to observe a wonderful restoration of a historic estate or search for ghosts, this castle is sure to please!
