Haunted by Those Sad Eyes

A Poem

Etienne J. Sarfelli
A man approached me yesterday
as I was posting fliers for the census bureau.
He asked me, in slightly broken English, if it was about a job.
I turned to look at him
and then my heart was broken.
There was something about his eyes.
I don't mean in an 'I want him kind of way.'
No, they were sad eyes, kind eyes,
I need to support my family, hungry kind of eyes.
I smiled at him and asked him to come and apply for a job
doing my best to reassure him that things would be alright.
Today, as I thought about him and those eyes,
I prayed to God that he would come and find me
that he would try to find a job and would succeed
I need to see those eyes again...
full of happiness and not hopelessness and despair
otherwise, I feel I may be haunted by those eyes for a very long time.
